Before I enter the police station, I cross my fingers and do a silent prayer in my mind, please let my parents be truly innocent, please let me have them back. Then I grab Tara's hand and we go inside together.
"Hello kids, how can I help you?" the police guard at the desk says.
"Um, we are here to see Jennifer and Adam Dilworth," I stammer out a few words.
He looks at me confused, "That's private information. Are you related to them?"
"Yes, we are their children," I tell him.
"Well then, follow men and I'll see what I can do," He says getting up. We follow him inside the building through a bunch of offices and then the cells come along. He leads us through many cells until I see them. They are hugging, sitting in the cell together.
"Mommy!" Tara shouts before I can stop her. They lift their heads up and look at us.
"Kids, what are you doing here?" Mom says. I would like to say that she looks happy saying that to us, but she looks scared that we are here.
"We came to rescue you and Dad," I tell her enthusiastically, so she will cheer up.
She narrows her eyes at me,"Kayne, take your sister and go. You cannot be here right now."
"Did you actually hack something?" I ask her, making my words loud so that she won't dodge the question. She does a slight shake of head to tell me no, but I get it now. The police guard was there so she couldn't tell me what she really wanted to tell me.
"May I be excused? I have to use the bathroom," I tell them so that I can go somewhere alone. They say yes and I leave to go to the bathroom. As soon as I am in a stall, I take the computer out of my bag and turn it on. I needed to check what my parents had been doing on this computer and if they actually did hack something.I look at the browsing history and realize that it wouldn't be there because if they did hack they would have erased their history. So I used something that the teachers in my schools use, a code. This code basically lets you see all the history, even if it is deleted. I look and see nothing, I see nothing unusual and nothing hacked. A wave of relaxation goes over me. I know now that they aren't criminals and that if I show other people it'll be alright, they'll be let out of jail and everything will be back to normal. But even in my mind, I know that it won't be that easy. The main thing is that I have to get people to believe me because they are going to ask the obvious question: what if they used a different computer? But I know my parents, and they would never use something that is not theirs. The real question is who accused my parents of doing this and why? Then it comes to me, the people talking at the front desk the first time I was here last night. They were Ms. Anne, and if I can remember right, one of the investigators!I grab the computer in my hand and race back to the jail cell.
When I get there I ask the police officer to talk in private. Once we are in the hallway I show him all my evidence and tell him about my findings. He looks at me, impressed, "Wow kid, you really think your parents are innocent, huh?"
I nod so hard I get dizzy for a second.
"Well I guess that I could take it to an inspector and see if this is true," he tells me. "But don't have your hopes too high because it might not happen."
I nod once again. I hear footsteps coming our way; we both look up to see a tired-looking Ms. Anne.
"Kayne," she says relieved. "You had me worried sick, where's Tara?"
I step behind the protection of the policeman and tell him, "That's Ms. Anne."
He steps closer to her and says, "You are guilty for making a false accusation on two people." He looks at me, "Go back to the cell, I'll get this all under control."
I nod and go to see my parents.
Tara runs up to me and says, "Daddy wants to talk to you."I go to my father and ask,
"What did you want to ask me?"
He looks at me with serious eyes and replies, "don't get yourself into trouble, me and your mom will be just fine."
"But Dad, I actually did help. I found your computer and showed them that you didn't do it, and they said that they would look into it more," I tell him happily.
He smiles and holds my hand through the railing of the jail cell, "I thank you with all my heart," he says squeezing my hand. Something in his eyes look worried though but I guess it must just be the tiredness. "You are truly the best son ever," he continues. I squeeze his hands back and my eyes start to get blurry again. However, this time they are blurry not because of sadness, but because of joy.
