"As the twelfth hour approaches I invite you all to gather in close and watch as blood spills across the land, replenishing our fruitful bounty!" Chance called, arms held out wide as he grinned maliciously in the moonlight.

The crowd whistled and whispered amongst themselves as they all moved in closer, making me feel very claustrophobic as the already small circle tightened. The butcher was readying himself by the guillotine, sharpening his knives in anticipation for the carving of my flesh.

"Gather round, gather round. There's a spot for everybody." Chance knocked my shoulder as he spoke, making me trip towards the guillotine. "Now, we take a vote. Let's see a show of hands for who wants the potion master's bastard child to go first, leaving little miss princess here to watch her lover die?"

I watched as about half of the townspeople raised their hands high, waving and whooping as they voted on my death. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat as I watched, flabbergasted by how people could be so heartless.

"Now, a show of hands for princess Narcissa Black to be the first to be kissed by the guillotine, leaving her peasant girl lover to mourn what she swore to protect and couldn't?" My bottom lip quivered as I watched the show of hands, just over half voting for Narcissa to be the first to die.

"Wonderful." Chance chuckled darkly.

I was going to have to watch as my only friend, and girlfriend's, head was gruesomely removed from her body. I had promised Andromeda I wouldn't let any harm to come to the girl and I had failed. I had failed them all.

"Please.." I begged in nothing above a whisper, my voice shaking. "Please. Don't hurt her. Do what you want to me but don't hurt her."

I pleaded with Chance to let her go, all but groveling at the man's feet as tears obscured my vision. He was clearly taking pleasure in my pain, watching with a little smirk on his face as I begged him for mercy.

"Y/n." Narcissa spoke calmly, pulling my attention back to her. "It's ok."

The other girl grabbed my upper arms, holding me at arm's length as she looked deep into my eyes. Her eyes were glassy with tears but her expression was serene and acceptant in contrast to my full blown fear and panic.

"I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you." I blubbered, submitting to my emotions and breaking down.

"You did protect me y/n. So many times. For so long. You did so much for me that I never deserved. I couldn't have asked for a better friend or lover if I tried. I love you y/n." Narcissa pulled me into a tight embrace, my own fingers clinging to her clothing as I sobbed into her shoulder.

"I love you too Cissy."

"How touching." Chance spoke sarcastically, watching as we shared our final goodbyes. "A true fairytale you two are. The princess falling in love with a peasant girl. However, I don't believe this story will have such a happy ending."

The man grabbed each of our shoulders, forcing us apart. I stumbled back, biting back an insult as I glared harshly at our kidnapper through bloodshot eyes.

Suddenly another man came hurtling into the center of our circle, out of breath and wild eyed as he searched for who he needed to speak with. Finally his gaze landed on Chance, his shoulders slumping and his face slackening as he prepared himself to deliver some bad news to his boss.

"Sir. The potion's master is nowhere to be found. We've searched everywhere. He's just vanished."

My eyebrows shot upwards, lips parting in surprise as I quickly glanced to Narcissa who had the same shocked expression on her face. Turning to Chance the smallest hint of satisfaction bubbled up into my stomach at his confidence wavered, the muscles in his jaw clenching as he thought about what that meant.
