"You crazy bitch!!! What did you just say?"
I finally found her- in a narrow, dimly lit alley, standing alone with a plastic carry bag in hand, cornered by two drunk men. What I feared about was actually happening, I could hear my heart thumping. I promptly ran towards her but my feet halted when I saw the look on her face. She poked her tongue inside her cheek, a scary look in her eyes. Her face didn't show anything but that odd calmness it always adorned. And in the next moment she did something I could never have imagined her doing. She poked the eyes of one man with her fingers and kicked the other in the balls. In the blink of an eye both the men were at her feet, groaning in pain. She stood there surprised at her own self but I knew better.
"RUN!!!"
I quickly got hold of her hand and sprinted before those guys pulled themselves together and all hell broke loose. We kept running without looking back but we had to stop soon because she was out of breath rather quickly.
She crouched down panting, holding her waist. "Hey! Are you alright? Did they hurt you?" I asked in a worried tone. I didn't know what transpired before I arrived.
"I'm alright." She replied after she calmed down. She slowly stood up, a shaky breath left her mouth. Was she scared? She must be offcourse. Even my heart was beating as if it would pop out of my mouth. Just because she acted brave in front of them didn't mean she wasn't scared. But she didn't let any of that express on her face. It was the same on the day we first met, she had run away from home, got into an accident and was still unfazed. She never allowed her vulnerability to show on her face, she didn't like to be... weak. Now I know why I hated this blank expression of hers-- beacause I too wear that face quite often. She is like me, and that for some reason angered me.
"What was so important that you came this far to buy and couldn't wait till the morning?" My voice came out in a growl. I snatched the plastic bag from her and scooped out it's content.
"Medicines? Are you sick?" Worry once again mixed with my anger. If she was sick why did she come on her own? She could have just told us.
"Painkillers. For menstrual cramps."
"Oh." Though I keep forgetting.. she was a woman afterall. I put them back in the bag and saw some female product in there. I cleared my throat, "But still.. why did you come alone? You should have just asked me or halmoni to come along."
"It's not a big deal real--"
"Not a big deal!! You must know what sort of neighborhood this is by now? And you still thought it was a good idea to come here all by yourself?" This place that was about a thirty minutes walk from our home was quite infamous. 1-2 cases of assault happen here almost every month. It's secluded, not well lit and no CCTVs- a perfect place for crimes.
