Day 1 of 7
Location: Outside the Old School Building
Time: May 28th, 1998, 12:15 AM
Stepping out into the unknown, I could feel the weight of the moment pressing against my chest. The sound of my heartbeat seemed to reverberate through the corridor, echoing the anticipation that hung in the air. Shadows danced along the walls as the fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting eerie patterns. Every creak and rustle amplified, making me acutely aware of the potential dangers lurking in every corner.
Once making his way outside, Nate began to survey the area taking in the ginormous yet undesirable landscape. This was only one area, but to me, this island felt far bigger than what Ms. Anette had explained to them. Reflecting on his memories from what he had briefly learned in school during their World War ll unit and the little he knew about Palmyra Atoll, it being part of the Line Islands and situated about halfway between Hawaii and American Samoa, he could tell some things were slightly off. {Did the government modify the island, or was this always its natural look? I wouldn't put it past them if so.} The island felt strangely deserted as if all signs of life had been intentionally eradicated, leaving behind an eerie stillness. And to go along with it a heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by the distant echoes of machinery and the occasional flicker of malfunctioning lights.
Looking around he could see tall grass on both sides of the school building, there was lots of greenery and insects (crawling and flying) despite the island not being populated, to him it only solidified his assertion that the government was the ones who were actively maintaining it. The question that followed in his mind was were they specifically maintaining it for this "game?" Though he had no time to worry about that thinking back to the note he had received from Avery. The note read {I know that this suspicious, but I ask u to trust me. Meet me 5 Kilometers (km) north of the back of the school building alone. I hide best I can, If you not there in 30 minutes, then I'll know your answer.} The note wasn't perfect: it had several grammatical errors and was evidently a rushed job, but she certainly wanted Nate to receive it before she left the classroom. Nate wondered why she had given him such specific instructions, was this a potential trap? No, Avery wouldn't do something like that, but even so this "game" is meant to make you distrust those around you, either way, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't follow up on her request knowing the debt he's still owed her.
That wasn't his only reason though, above all he wanted to see how fast the madness and paranoia would spread to the others, and if anyone would take this seriously, that (for now) was one of his main objectives. With a goal in mind, Nate who was crouched hiding on the left side of the side building would begin walking to meet Avery at the approximated destination when he saw something in his field of view a little ways away: it was a bloodied Marcus Goldman (Boy No.1) holding a blood-stained tomahawk in one hand and the severed head of Kayla Stevens (Girl No.1) in the other.
Even from afar, you could tell his face looked strangely contorted, it was as if he had lost some of his usual vitality. The faint moonlight illuminated his blood-soaked body, the white shirt part of his school uniform had looked as if it was altered using red dye. It was dark, however, from Marcus's perspective he also saw a figure standing in the distance a little ways away from where he and what was left of Kayla were.
He began to speak rather desperately. "E-Elijah, I-is that you? I-I'm sorry, man I-I didn't mean to, s-she startled me! Please you gotta believe me, man, I'm begging you, you-you have to!!! Got damn it!" Marcus's voice was getting more impatient and more erratic as Nate began to slowly back up disgusted and in panic, Marcus seeing this would start dashing towards him trying to close the gap as Nate in total fear who had been backing up began to frantically speed away in the opposite direction hoping to meet up with Avery by going around and circling back. {Why!? I-I don't get it!! He...The program hadn't even been going for a full 30 minutes and Marcus had already-!}
One of his questions had been answered, paranoia won and rather quickly too. No, more importantly, he had to leave. Not only was Marcus causing a scene, but he was also alerting both those who had yet to come out of the school and those who already had to exactly where they were. He tried to hold his digestive fluids in his body as he kicked back off his feet to give himself more momentum and ran into the nearby forest hoping for any semblance of escapism or momentary safety.
40 Students Remaining.
