Chapter 27: Brave New World

Piper Forbes woke up in the middle of the night with a start. She sat up in her hospital bed and gasped as though she was previously stopped being able to take in air. It took a few seconds for her to calm down and once she did, memories of earlier had come back. How Katherine had paid her and Caroline a visit and how she had killed them.

She wondered about how she was still alive until she felt the hunger in the back of her throat. Suddenly she realised that she wasn't really alive. Instead she was in transition. Earlier Grayson had given her and Caroline his blood in order to help them heal a little quicker.

The sound of Caroline waking up brought Piper out of her thoughts. Making her way over to her twin, Piper sits on the side of Caroline's bed. "Hey, Caroline." Piper says cautiously, not knowing how her sister was going to react.

"What happened?" Caroline whispers as she tries to make sense of everything.

Letting out a sigh Piper answers Caroline as she grabs her sisters hand. "Katherine happened." She revealed causing Caroline's eyes to widen. "Yep. The bitch is back after what, 150 years? And apparently one of the first things on her agenda was to kill the both of us."

"Kill us?!" Caroline exclaims. Due to how loud she was Piper rushed to keep her quiet.

"Hey, no yelling." Piper scolds. "What I'm saying is that Katherine killed us. But we had Grayson's blood in our system when we died and we are now in transition."

"Into a vampire?" Caroline quietly asks, now in too much shock to make much noise. "But we can't be dead. I can't be dead. I don't want to be dead."

Seeing how stressed her sister was getting Piper pulled her into a hug, "Hey, hey. It's okay. It's going to be okay. You know why?" Piper says as she pulls away from the hug. "Because we've got each other and Grayson will be by our sides the whole time to help us." She reassures. "Now I know that I don't want to be dead, well for good this time and to complete the transition we need some blood so I'm just going to go and see if I can steal some for us. Now that is something I never thought I'd say."

"Pipes." Caroline calls out just before Piper could leave the room. "How are you so calm right now? We've just died and now in transition and you've just stated that you're going to find some blood for us so that we can still be living non-living people."

Piper shrugs her shoulders. "I'm not calm, Caroline. I'm freaking out on the inside. All I want to do is call Grayson but right now there's nothing that he can do. It's happened and we can't change that. So I'm just making the best of a bad situation and I'm going to call Grayson first thing in the morning so that we can tell him. But I don't know how long we've got to drink some blood and I'm not risking it to wait and get Grayson to get some for us. So I'm taking some as soon as I can." Piper answers before leaving the room to find a blood bag.

After searching around few a few minutes Piper caught the scent of blood. She didn't know how she could smell it so clearly without technically being a vampire yet but either way she didn't care all to much at the moment.

The blood bag was in a room where a patient was getting a transfusion. She felt bad that she had to take the blood bag from that person but she didn't have any other option. Taking the blood, Piper quickly makes her way back into her and Caroline's shared room. Once inside she sat at the end of her sister's bed as she held the blood bag in her hands.

"Are you really going to drink that?" Caroline questions as she stares at the blood, not being able to take her eyes off of it.

"I really don't want to die. You know that dying has always been a huge fear of mine." Piper says as she looks at the blood. "And this... this will give me eternity. It will give me forever with Grayson. I mean I knew at some point me turning into a vampire would have come up in a discussion. Grayson's a vampire and I'm human. If I want to be with him forever, then I have to be able to live forever as well. I just wish I got to choose when I would become one. I mean being stuck at 17 sucks. I can't even get an ID. I'll have to compel drinks from bars as I'll look too young. And that's just extra effort." Piper complains.
