Quartz's P.O.V.

Edward and I decided that no matter how exhausted we were, we needed to tell the others what we found in my research lab.

Hehe, my research lab. Laaaab...

Alright, stop it!

"Brother, can you call everyone here?"

Onyx was standing idly by, nervously biting his thumb. His habit of biting his thumb when he's worried about something really makes me worried.

Poor thumb.

Although this brother of mine calls the shots most of the time and acts older than me-- even though I am technically the oldest-- he still listened to me. He values my opinion just as much as I value his.

"By everyone, as in, everyone?"

I nodded, "Yes. Even Tilly and Ollie."

"I would hate to be waking them up," he wiped his hands on his lap a couple of times, trying to calm his nerves before going outside.

He didn't show it (much), but he was shaken up at the revelation that Unity had told us:

That the zombies are evolving.

Safe to say that all of us were projecting our nervousness through Onyx. It may not look like it, but my brother wears his heart on his sleeve. Kinda like Alistair does.

Nothing prepared us for that word. Evolution.

In a stance of an ordinary person, it seemed impossible. What we watched in movies, read in novels, and viewed on tv couldn't have prepared us for the truth.

In a stance of a nurse who knew a thing or two about the walking dead, it is probable. Mutation is the first step to evolution. Organisms mutate to survive. So do animals, so do zombies. And so do humans.

It makes me wonder that if the zombies get to mutate... do we?

Edward has been really quiet after Unity confronted him. It might have hit a sore spot, but I don't care. As long as he doesn't have any ill-intentions towards my beloved.

"Make sure to tell her everything soon." I said to him, "Even though she looks like she doesn't give a damn most times or gets amused easily, it doesn't mean that you get to take that side of her for granted."

"I'm not taking her for granted." He startled me with his agitated tone, his eyes sharp as they bore down on me. "And she does give a damn. She wouldn't be risking her life for Tilly's fever medicine and getting us this corpse if she didn't. She only has a devil-may-care attitude."

He frowned at me. "Why are you even badmouthing her to me? Is this a ploy so just the both of you could be with her? Guess what," my lips twitched in amusement. It's true what they say about smart people being overly-imaginative as well. Maybe it's because of their constant overthinking. He was still rambling in and on about him not giving up on Unity.

"I'm not giving up on her. We're not giving up on her. And technically, we met her first! That has got to count for something." He seemed like a noble looking at a peasant, his nose so high I'm afraid it's gonna be taller than Burj Khalifa.

"And I am gonna tell her everything, hopefully soon!" He puffed out his chest after he spoke, not realizing that the rest were already here.

"You should've fucking told her this before she fucking slept." Darius was the first to speak among them, his smirk a tell-tale sign that Edward wasn't normally like this.

Edward's professionalism can be seen on how he immediately straightened up, his habit of raising his eyeglasses whenever it slithered down his thin nose was made when he coughed.
