I'd considered kicking up a fight earlier — telling them both to piss off and have the party elsewhere — but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

As much as Jake pissed me off for not asking, I get why he's doing it. He finally has his best mate back after four years, I'm sure he's eager to make up for lost time.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't opposed to castrating the both of them earlier today but going along with tonight did seem to have it's perks after all.

When I'd called Sarah about thirty minutes ago and invited her over, she was here in ten minutes flat with a duffel bag slung over her arm, clearly taking up my offer to stay the night.

Sarah and I have been friends since year seven. We met on the first day of high school and have been practically joined at the hip ever since.

Sarah's still living at home with her mum while she's in university, studying to become a primary school teacher.

Her mum's got a new boyfriend, Gilbert. Sarah gets on with him alright but doesn't like the fact that her mum is suddenly 'having a mid life sexual awakening' as she puts it.

He's nice enough but considering the idea of them doing the dirty makes her squirm I knew she'd be keen on staying the night if I offered.

"The black or the red?" Sarah asks, holding up two bodycon dresses. They're basically the same — tight, ribbed, mid-thigh. One has short sleeves. The other has spaghetti straps.

"You go black, I'll go red," I decide, and she nods, shutting the door before wriggling out of her clothes and into the dress.

"So..." she drags the word out, already smirking. "Did you invite Adam?"

She wiggles her brows at me like she's twelve. I groan.

I roll my eyes, cringing a little at the thought and regretting the fact that yes I had in-fact invited him to come tonight.

Adam was our mate in high school, he started off as a bit of a third wheel when he first came to our school in year nine but ended up fitting into the group nicely enough.

That was of course until he got drunk at a house party one night and confessed his feelings for me. At first I was hesitant, not keen on the idea of making the friendship awkward but decided to give him a go in the end.

It helped that he was decent looking and overall a pretty charming guy but there was always something missing.

We were going steady for about three months before I called things off. There was no big blow out and no messy fights, I just wasn't feeling it and didn't want to keep flogging a dead horse.

In the grand scheme of things he was a pretty good boyfriend by dictionary definition. He said all the right things, tried to woo me any chance he got, you get the gist.

There just wasn't any chemistry. I felt like he was far more invested than I was.
There was also the fact that he'd never given me an orgasm.

Anyway, after we broke up he stopped hanging around with us as much. We're all still friends on the surface level but it was clear I got custody of Sarah in the divorce.

To answer Sarah's question - Yes, I did invite him.

I'm a nice person. Sue me.

"I'll take that as a yes," Sarah says, grinning at me as she curls the last strand of her hair.

I ignore her and stand to get dressed rather than humouring her.

Slinging the red dress over my head, I shimmy it down my body until it sits snugly against my thighs, hugging every curve on its way down. I ditch my bra and underwear - deciding it would too easily show beneath the fabric and ruin it's smooth illusion.
