Night had crept in after a golden sunset. Its glimmering effects replaced with dark. Though the city still had lights down below. Car lights whizzing past on the road, street lights lit up the same street. Busy people walked along crowded streets, while others kept to the alleys and backways of the city. Rats and garbage as far as the eye can see. You would think you were looking at a sewer, but it's only New York.
"Oh man I'm late for work again! Stockman is going to fire me this time I know it!" A young girl cried, rushing into one of the many tall buildings.
She ran and ran. Her black hair messily done up into a bun. Her glasses balancing ever so slightly on her nose. Her new lipstick already fading to reveal her peach-colored lips.
Finding her way to the elevator, she said a silent prayer. Hoping that her boss wouldn't realize she was late for the fifth time that week.
Ding. This was her stop.
Taking a gulp of fresh air, and a bit of courage, she stepped into a huge lab. Chemicals were boiling at different rates, as well as in different forms. Other scientists were there working. But, no one worked on the same project.
April was given a job where she studied how animals reacted in different situations. Although, when her work day ends, the animals she looked at were removed, and supposedly disposed of.
"April O'Neil, I must have a word with you." A colored man with thick black hair gruffly said."Of course, Mr. Stockman." Our now not too brave April O'Neil sighed.
The two headed into a single room at the back of the lab. This was Mr. Stockman's office. The room was small but it had all the essentials. A computer, printer, pens, and even a name plate.
"Do you know why I called you in here O'Neil?" Stockman questioned with a tilt of his head."I have some theories. But I would rather you tell me." April stated, nervously fiddling with her fingers.
Stockman looked at April, "April, your work at TCRI is very informative. But you show up late almost every day. What I want to know, is why."April paused.
"I know I have been late a few times in the past. I know that kind of behavior isn't tolerated. But I just don't feel like the experiment I'm doing is humane."
"Why do you think it isn't humane, Miss O'Neil?" Stockman interjected, placing his clasped hands on his desk.
"You see sir, I've been doing some research. About where you get the animals, and where they go when we are done with them. Both the retrieval and disposals are not real," April pulled out a heavily filled folder from her bag, "I looked up both of their backgrounds, it's like they never existed."
April paused to look up from her over flowing folder. Waiting to see if Stockman was following her theory."Go on Miss O'Neil, I can see you have more to the story."
"Right, well I decided to follow the truck that removes the animals. I wanted to know what they were doing to them. I followed them all the way to a janky old warehouse down by the pier. That's when I saw it. They were keeping them in rusty old cages! None of them were being fed. The worst part is, they were dissecting them. Alive. Not only that, there was this green ooze everywhere." April paused, stammering she said,
"Like... Like the mute agent you and I were working on..."Stockman's hands that were clasped and sitting on the desk were now covering his mouth.
"Well done O'Neil. Now I have to fire you. Oh, but not in the usual procedures mind you."Stockman casually spoke. Standing up from his desk, he walked towards our now frightened April.
"Maybe you should have stuck with a reporter job O'Neil." Stockman said as he covered Aprils face with a cloth dowsed in chloroform.
April's vision grew foggy, her head heavy. She didn't want to stay awake. She couldn't keep her eyes open. The last thing she heard, was Stockman's hollow laughter.
It all started when April was tasked with creating a Mute Agent. This Agent was supposed to create a steady flow of DNA into any egg or embryo and turn it into a different animal. Take a turtle egg for example, normally a turtle would hatch. But with the Mute Agent a crocodile could hatch instead!
Thinking her research would be used mainly for endangered species, April went to work. Spending countless hours, days, and years perfecting this formula.
Little did she know, Stockman had been stealing all of her ideas and research. Eventually he told April the experiment had failed, and that April should forget the Mute Agent and focus on something else.
She was then assigned to study the animals and how they behaved in certain situations. She didn't know why, it had to be the most boring assignment ever. The only exciting thing that happened was when she was following the cars to the warehouse by the pier.
The pier.
A ringing began in the darkness. A slow, high-pitched wail that led April into consciousness. Her head heavy, and her vision fuzzy, April lifted her head.
Looking around, her surroundings seemed familiar to her. The dirty walls and floors, as well as the lab of broken beakers and test tubes filled with what appeared to be blood.
"You're going nowhere. As you can see, you are tied up at the moment. But don't worry. We've been needing a good human test subject." Stockman's annoying voice echoed."Oh, don't struggle. It will be over in a matter of minutes." Stockman walked out of the shadows, and towards our trapped April.
Holding up a vile with a neon green liquid he said, "The Mute Agent you created doesn't work exactly as planned. But with some testing, we can perfect it, and create living super weapons!"
Behind Stockman red eyes stared directly at April. Low growls could be heard echoing in the warehouse.
"What kind of weapons are you making here Stockman?" April calmly asked, looking around at the many eyes glued to her position.
"I'm glad you asked April. Ivan, Anton!" Stockman yelled into the shadows.
Two figures walked out. They definitely weren't human. One took the appearance of a rhino. The other a warthog. The two figures were rippling with muscle, and taller than the average man.
"April, Meet Ivan and Anton. Two verry normal humans who, well, volunteered. As you can see the Mute Agent has a much different effect on humans."
"This is horrible! The Mute Agent was supposed to help the endangered species! Not to be used as some weapon!" April screamed pulling on her bindings.
"Now, now O'Neil. Don't say such things. I'm only trying to perfect your creation! Why we could save billions of your precious endangered animals." Stockman said walking behind April.
"So, which animal do you want to be?"
