you look down
the barrel of your gun
check your scope
lock eyes with a soldier
who stares at you
just the same
gun pointed at your head
you hesitate
there is a touch of intimacy
as you search each other's face
full of fear
eyes sunken
skin ashy and dirty
an understanding a bond
you fire and don't look back
turning away from what you can never run from
