Tony had gotten side-tracked but Bruce returned not too long after Vision left. Peter didn't pay much attention to him though, he was too busy anxiously waiting to hear from Vision, to know that no one was going to die and that all the people they cared about were alright. When Vision finally came back into the room and asked for a moment with Peter. Bruce thought it was weird but he left to get a snack anyways.
"Did you shut down the core?" Peter asked the second Bruce was gone.
"No, there's some sort of force field that prevents me from entering the chamber, or at least I can't phase in and I fear that going in alone-"
"Would be insane," Peter finished. "I don't want to lose you either."
"We might have to tell the other Avengers,"
"No, I made a risky decision, one that I probably should have thought through a lot more, but we can still make this work, I don't want to lose even more people because we waited to explain."
"So how do you think we can still make this work?" Vision asked, but doubtful and curious.
"I'm coming as your backup," Peter knew it was a horrible idea, but maybe if he wore black clothes and a ski mask instead of his bright suit then they might be able to sneak in. "I'll sneak in, crawl on the ceiling until I reach the control room, I know where it is from my search for the unstable core. Then I'll disarm the forcefield preventing you from phasing in and you shut down the core." Peter looked at Vision, hopeful that he didn't sound crazy, he sure felt crazy.
"You really think this is going to work?"
"I don't know, but it's worth a shot," Peter sighed as he jumped out of bed. "Mr Stark will probably kill me later."
"If the men who shot you don't first you mean," Vision said, and Peter swears that Vision still has the sarcasm he hears from FRIDAY that he can only assume was programmed into JARVIS as well.
"Just cover for me while I change and we'll meet up there." Peter nodded to Vision and snuck out of the medical bay while he had the chance. Bruce would be back soon and then everything would go crazy. They'd realize he was gone and Peter just prayed that MR Stark wasn't insane enough to put a chip under his skin.
Peter was standing on the roof of the building when Vision landed next to him quietly. Peter looked down at the front door and swallowed hard. He then looked to Vision, a thousand thoughts rushing through his mind like a downhill river. He could've stayed in time lines where minimal life was lost, he could have protected his high school friends and the thousands that lived around the area. Only he chose to risk it all for his family. He risked so many families, just to try to protect his.
"Are you sure this is a good idea Peter?" Vision asked and Peter nodded, it was more to convince himself though.
"Have they realize-"
"I was sent out to look for you, everyone is quite worried and angry." Vision didn't hesitate to answer and Peter took a deep breath. He should have come clean like before, now on his last chance, everything was new and up in the air. "I hated lying to Wanda," Vision adds and Peter's memory flashes in the corner of his mind. Wanda's death, clear and painful.
"I'm going in," Peter said and Vision nodded, his cape flowing nicely in the wind, Avengers tower standing above the city behind him. "For Mr Stark, Clint, Nat and Wanda." Peter shook his arms and legs as if he were about to run a race and then he crawled down the side of the building, through an open window and back onto the ceiling. This was his one chance, his last hope, if this failed, he'd be responsible for too much death.
Peter was being as careful as he could. The ceilings were tall and it helped him hide, but if even a single person spotted him, it would be over. Vision was waiting patiently on the roof, he checked in with Peter on occasion, just to make sure that Peter was alright. Vision and Peter were both on edge, they were worrying and lying to the Avengers, and risking more than just his own lives. Peter approached the lab carefully and whispered his progress to Vision. Then he crawled down the wall and opened the door. He was hoping for something crazy, and by that he meant an empty lab. Unfortunately that was not the case. Peter could have pushed the door open as slowly as possible, but no matter what he was going to be noticed.
"Hey, I didn't know there was a bad guy science class," he tried to mock, but it felt sort of off and forced. There was simply too much at stake for him to really joke. There was also many people within that lab and Peter could see the switch for the forcefield. He had to get to it, but before he could he was tackled by about 6 people. Using his strength, Peter got free and webbed up three of them, but with more coming he made a dash for forcefield controls. An energy weapon went off and Peter was blown across the room and into a wall. He fell onto the ground and knew he had broken ribs, his was out of breath again and for a moment he was surrounded, getting kicked and punched.
"Peter, do you need assistance, should I call the others?"
"No," Peter said, shooting a web at the ceiling and getting away from the crowd momentarily. They pulled him off the ceiling a second later, but he was doing his best to defend himself. Knocking enemies down and webbing them up Peter still felt overwhelmed. His webs around the door were beginning to snap and he had to keep shooting more on, backup was coming and he couldn't hold them off for long.
"Peter?" Vision asked over the comm again.
"Working on it." Peter wished he had his suit, because those web shooters were more equipped and had more settings. Most of them Peter hadn't even trained with let, but he certainly wished he had his web net, or at least a rapid fire mode. Peter dodged another energy blast and winced. He used his webs to fling a table towards him and he ducked at the last moment letting it fly into the group behind him. It was all he needed to gain an advantage. Peter ran to the controls and looked them over, they weren't too complicated and the Avengers had taught him so much. Peter disabled the forcefield just as he was attacked again. The door to the lab burst open, more enemies rushed in and Peter was beginning to be really hurt. He could hardly stop them from killing him. Peter was getting close to the back wall and he was coughing again. Only this cough had nothing to do with the past timeline and blood splattered on the floor. Peter knew Vision was able to phase now and he hoped that his ally was powering down the core. He needed help.
