It was exactly one year since we met when he ran out of gas on the side of that country road where I saved his ass.
"You've given me the two things I never imagined I'd ever have as a hunter: unconditional love, and a family. For that I can never thank you enough, but if you let me, I can try. Kate Linder, will you do me the honor of being my wife?" Dean said as he opened the box.
My hands flew up to my mouth as my jaw dropped to the floor.
"Dean, I- yes." I said, crying.
"Wait, yes?!" He said, stunned.
"Yes!" I nodded, throwing my arms around him.
As soon as he was able to, he slipped the ring on my finger, the headlights and the moonlight reflecting off of the locket around my neck. Soon after, I felt his lips crash against mine.
"Dean..." I moaned, "We still have to get home."
He opened the trunk and took out a jerrycan of gasoline, perfectly measured out to get us to the nearest gas station.
You could hear it in the silence, in the way he looked at me in our dark bedroom that night. He'd never fallen in love with anyone like he had fallen in love with me. At three in the morning, he woke me up with a strange look on his face.
"You're my best friend." He whispered as he took my hand into his larger one and rolled over.
"Dean Winchester, are you spooning me?" I asked.
"Maybe." He said, nuzzling into my neck.
The next morning, I threw on a pair of Dean's boxers and one of his plaid shirts before I went out to the kitchen.
"Kate, is that my shirt?" Dean asked when he came out to this kitchen.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" I shouted, bouncing my scolding hot, burnt toast between my hands.
"Dork." He laughed, pouring a cup of coffee.
"For your information, yes it is your shirt. These are your boxers as well." I said, smacking the waistband.
"I wore those last week." He said, looking at me like I was crazy.
"So?" I replied.
"Well, if you want to wear my dirty underwear I guess that's your choice." Dean added.
"Just don't wear mine." I said, "Well, you can I guess. Just don't do it anywhere but our room."
"You're adorable." He said, wrapping his hands around my waist and resting his chin on the top of my head.
I understood why people went to great lengths to find what I had with Dean, and why they lost their minds when it was gone. For the first time, I was actually in love.
