a week. he just had to be there for a week, then he could leave. getting married on valentine's day was such a chiclé thing to do. he felt equally relieved and anxious when he got the invite.
it was nice to know he was still considered family, and that he hadn't been forgotten after he was gone and stopped being in touch. but it was stressful to know he would have to see people again, or more like a specific person. that he had been trying to forget, especially knowing he could never really do that.
a relieved sigh escaped his mom's lips just as he put his fork down, finishing the last bite of his lunch. blue eyes looked at her right away, offering him a curious look, the same his dad was also showing. the woman put his phone down, before looking at them.
"my boss finally authorized my request to get wednesday off," she announced. "so i won't have to come back home right after the wedding, we can stay for the after party altogether."
cas hummed at her words, leaning onto his chair slightly. "tuesday has to be one of the worst possible days for a wedding," he mumbled in response. he wasn't a wedding expert, but he was pretty sure the weekends were usually better for it.
"it's a little unconventional," his mom agreed, nodding a couple times. "but the date makes up for it."
"valentine's day is dumb," he argued, getting a snort in response.
"so, have you decided which suit you're gonna wear or can we help you pick?" the woman asked then, an excited smile on her lips. the same he saw many times growing up, whenever he had any special event that required him to dress up. cas tensed up on his chair, shifting awkwardly next. "...you do have at least one suit, right?"
"i'm gonna go buy one tomorrow," he was quick to assure, but it was already too late, his mom was already looking at him like he had single handedly killed the president.
"you still don't have it–? you need to go today," she instantly said. "you can't do those kinds of things at the last minute. what if you don't find one tomorrow? then you would have to go to more stores on monday and if you don't find any then, you would have to–"
"yeah, okay, i'll go today," cas hurried to interrupt. he knew better than to let his mom start visualizing every single what if that could go wrong. and she was right, anyways, the sooner he got the suit the sooner he could stop worrying about it.
"maybe your graduation suit could work if it still fits you," his dad offered, reaching for his wife's hand and caressing it softly. "it's still in your closet."
"i'll try it on," cas agreed, nodding a few times. he helped clean the table as quickly as he could before heading to his room, closing the door behind him then letting out a quiet sigh. formal events sucked.
before he could really think of what he was doing, he found himself standing in front of the window, looking through it as a force of habit. it was just an action associated with a place, the same thing he did almost every day for basically eight years straight, not actually wanting to look outside but doing so anyway. and to his surprise, instead of the park, his eyes fixed on something else this time.
a car had just parked right next to his parents one, and it only took him a couple seconds to recognize who it belonged to. but even if he hadn't, he would've known anyway, because his owner was getting off the vehicle just as cas watched.
short brunet hair looked slightly darker than the last time he saw it, but the bright smile was the same as the very first day they met. his features hadn't changed much in those last three years, but he still looked somewhat older somehow.
seeing dean after so long was a weird experience. a part of him wanted to say hello, to open his window and call for him, as he did many times in the past. a part of him wanted to prolong their meeting, avoiding having to do so until the day of the wedding.
