cas stood up from his spot on the couch when he heard a knocking on the front door. his mom was cooking, so he didn't want to bother her, and his dad was at the store. for a moment, he thought maybe his dad had taken less time than he thought he would, and he was already back. but the second he opened the door, he realized how wrong he was.

"dean," he let out, eyes widened seeing the brunet, tall man in front of him. "cas," the boy instantly said back, a smile growing on his face and his cheeks seemingly pink. "hi," he said then, awkwardly shifting his weight from foot to foot. "sam told me you were already in town, so..."

"yeah," cas mumbled, nodding slowly. he kept his grip on the door as if needing an anchor to stay calm. "got here on friday,"

"oh." dean's facial expression changed as he heard that, the smile fading and his eyes looking less bright than usual. "—it's monday," he said. cas didn't respond, fighting the need to look away. he knew what those words meant, what they really wanted to say. why didn't you tell me sooner?

cas didn't know what to say, dean didn't add anything else either. they just stood there, in awkward silence, as if neither of them knew what to do next.

"is that dean?" his mom's voice suddenly interrupted, and cas almost sighed with relief. the woman was right there in a matter of seconds, hugging the brunet quickly with a big smile. "dean, please come in," she said, and his relief was gone. "dinner isn't ready yet, but we would love it if you stayed and joined us."

"of course," the boy agreed right away, before cas could say anything about it. "you guys can wait upstairs, i'm sure you have a lot of catching up to do." she clapped her hands happily, before walking back to the kitchen.

cas watched her leave, wishing that she wouldn't, before finally stepping aside to let the brunet inside. he closed the door, before heading to his room upstairs, knowing dean was following him. and it was weird, he felt weird, because a part of him was thrilled and his heart was beating fast. he had missed his friend, after all, he had missed his presence, his warmth. but at the same time, he had hoped he could avoid him for just one more day until the wedding.

cas opened his bedroom door, letting the brunet walk in first before doing so himself, closing the door behind him. he watched as the boy stood right in the center of the room, letting out a soft 'woah' as if his room had somehow become ten times more interesting than it really was. cas walked to stand next to him, not really knowing what else to do or how to behave.

"it looks exactly how i remembered it." dean hummed, looking around with the same curious expression that cas had memorized years ago. he leaned back slightly as he took in the room, bodies getting just a bit closer with the movement. cas stared at him, then examined their proximity. shoulders centimeters apart, arms barely grazing, and knees so close they almost touched. they've been closer, he thought. they've been so much closer.

"i haven't been here in four years," he offered as an explanation. his bedroom was exactly how he left it, he hadn't dared to make any changes. he couldn't bring himself to. "yeah." dean nodded as if agreeing with him. "last time i was here was when we kissed," the boy added then, all too casually, voice completely calm.

blue eyes look away right away, like that would help to ease the discomfort forming in his stomach. sometimes, he wondered how people could give such different meanings to the same occurrence.

"when we kissed," cas repeated before he could stop himself. "which time?" he asked then. his friend instantly snorted, playfully hitting his shoulder and mumbling a quiet 'idiot'.
