The hell was his problem?
Can you believe this guy? I decide to thank him for once, and he gives me this look as if I'm some sort of pathetic creature!
I watched as Jasper rolled his eyes at me and walked into his room, and I did just the same. I shut the door behind me and sighed, my breath shuttering with frustration. I didn't quite get the opportunity to lay out my thoughts at that moment, as a stack of packages propped up on my desk caught my attention.
They must have come in while we were out. I eyed them, knowing full well that they could have been for Artemis, but curiosity did get the better of me and — as embarrassing it is to say — I started snooping around through his stuff. Though, I didn't think it mattered all that much, the school would have done much more snooping around ahead of time, back when the packages and letters first arrived.
That's one of the many things I hated about this place. There's no way to communicate with the people back at home — despite the fact that we're allowed cellphones and such, there's no possible way to get in touch with the outside world. The only way to communicate is through letters and mail, which takes weeks to get through.
Continuing to live in this isolated institution felt like being trapped in a time warp. The only connection to the outside world is through snail mail which takes ages to deliver and receive. It's frustrating to be so cut off from the rapid pace of society, where instant communication is the norm. Especially in my case, since I haven't been outside of the school's location, blocked off from the rest of the world, in a pocket-like dimension which was built using the Angel's magic.
As I glanced at the stack of packages on Artemis' desk, I couldn't help but wonder what news or updates they held from the outside. I opened a relatively large cardboard box and peered inside, but was instantly disappointed with my discovery. Within the box was a pair of white shoes, with multi-coloured shoelaces and a goofy cheese-looking character in a white shirt, red tie and brown shorts, embroidered onto the ankle area. It looked a lot like Artemis — obnoxious and annoying.
If that was what the outside world was like, then I'd rather not go at all. But then again, this was Artemis we were talking about – So I guess there was still hope for everyone else being mentally sane.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps startled me, despite the fact that I knew it wasn't Artemis – These footsteps were too heavy to be. Though I still shut the shoebox faster than the speed of light, my heart pounding with guilt and my face heating with embarrassment. Suddenly, the quick movement caused something to slip out from underneath the box, and an envelope slipped out, falling lightly onto the floor.
