ASHLEY

My team left, and Jayden told his associate to leave as well. When I was sure everyone was out of earshot, I turned to Jayden.

"What is wrong with you, Jayden? Do you want my team to think you're hitting on me?"

Silence.

"Aren't you going to say anything?"

Silence.

"You know what, forget it. I'm leaving."

I walked toward the door.

"I want a paternity test," I heard him say.

I turned slowly and asked like I hadn't heard him the first time. "What?"

He shoved his hands in his pockets and approached me slowly. "I said, I want a paternity test for Jordan."

"When are you going to drop this, Jayden?" I asked. "I've told you, she's not your kid, so let it go..."

"Then let me do the test."

"No!" I yelled too quickly.

"Why not? If you're so sure she's not my kid, then let me prove my conscience wrong."

"My answer is no, Jayden." I tried turning the doorknob, but he gripped my wrist.

"I know she's my daughter, so cut the nonsense."

I freed myself from his grip and left; he didn't stope me.

No, no, no. I didn't need this.

Later that day.

I parked my white Toyota and took deep breaths in the car. I was losing my composure and needed to talk to someone. I got out of the car hastily and rang the doorbell.

After a few minutes, Naomi opened the door.

"Ashley," she greeted me with a wonderful smile. "Come in."

I smiled back and walked inside.

Naomi was a very beautiful woman. She was about 50 years old but looked much younger. She had lush blonde hair and dark brown eyes that looked like chocolate.

I couldn't believe someone like her had no family.

She and her husband had been unable to have children, and just when they decided to adopt, he tragically died in a car accident. Naomi was devastated and refused to remarry.

The world could be so cruel sometimes.

"Where's Jordan?" I sat on the couch.

"Oh, she's asleep. Do you want me to bring her down?" She sat next to me.

I checked my watch—8:45 pm.How long had I been at the office?

"Not yet." I exhaled. "Thank you, Naomi, for everything."

"You and Jordan are family to me, you don’t need to thank me, Ash." She gave me a warm smile.
