The nights chased away the days in a never-ending cycle and before I knew it, the school year was over, and my family was getting ready to go on their annual camping trip at my grandmother's cabin in upstate New York.

I was in full zombie mode at the breakfast table, shoveling a spoonful of Cheerios into my mouth while reading the back of the cereal box. My mother passed Jake a carton of orange juice as she uttered the words that caused my utensil to drop from my hand, clanging into the bowl and sending a splash of milk onto the wooden tabletop.

"Jake, sweetie," she began. "Why don't you invite your friend, Matt along this summer? You two have grown quite close to one another this past year and it would be nice for you to have some company at the lake."

She beamed at my brother with proud as though he had just won a gold medal competing in the Olympics even though all he had done was finally meet a human being that could be decent for two seconds and not tease him for his extracurricular activities.

Jake flicked his gaze over towards me. Bringing Matt meant that his time would be divided not so evenly and our tradition of building a bigger and better treehouse in the woods behind Nanny's house would likely be cast aside this year in favor of some good ol' fashioned male bonding.

I nodded at him. "It's okay," I mouthed. Besides, it's not as though it's the end of the world. Having Matt around means that I have more opportunities to stare at him. But that's as far as it can go.

I could never jeopardize my twin's relationship with someone for my own selfish motives. As badly as I wanted his sexy friend to fall in love with me, I had to treat him as though he had leprosy and was not to be touched.

So, a few weeks later when we packed up our parents mini-van and sputtered down the dusty road to the cabin singing Take Me Home, Country Roads, I launched my mission to ignore Matt. I quickly found out that the task at hand was easy enough to accomplish given the boy's penchant for holing up with the telescope and stargazing for hours on end.

And by the time the last night of the trip had rolled around, I was no closer to swimming in dangerous waters than I had been the day I first met Matt. But everything was soon about to change.

Nanny didn't believe in installing air conditioning at her cabin, stating that it was hardly considered camping unless we were roughing it. I wanted to point out that the seventy-two-inch flat screen television mounted above the fireplace that she used religiously every day at four o' clock to watch her soaps probably fell under that same category but chose to instead, bite my tongue.

Humidity hung thick in the evening air as I tossed and turned beneath a thread-bare sheet. The moon winked at me behind gauzy curtains and despite the window being open, there was no air flow coming through.

Sighing and deciding that rest wasn't going to kiss my lips that night, I kicked aside the linens. I slid my feet into a pair of flip-flops and crept out of the cabin to make my way out towards the dock.

As soon as I stepped onto the dewy grass, I noticed a shadowy figure in the distance. My breath hitched in my throat, and I squinted my eyes to make out who or what, I was looking at. It wasn't completely out of the realm of possibility to run into a black bear on a midnight jaunt.

With trepidation, I took a careful step forward. "H...hello," I called.

The creature turned around and I quickly realized there was a telescope in front of it. Breathing a sigh of relief, I edged closer. "Oh. Jake, is that you? What are you doing up so late?"
