Matt
Valentine's Day was a holiday meant for love and romance, yet all it did was solidify how immensely I disliked Kayla, the girl I was supposed to be dating.
Outside of realizing how little we had in common, I also learned how very shallow she was. After being sentenced to a punishment greater than the death penalty, I returned to the halls following my lunch with Addison.
Spying Kayla chatting by the lockers with a petite redhead with bouncy curls, I came up behind her and slid my arms around her waist. "Hey, cutie," I whispered, nuzzling her ear. "How has your day been?"
She spun around to face me, her cheeks ghostly white. "Awful. Abby's boyfriend, Neil gifted her a ruby necklace when she specifically requested garnet."
I crinkled my nose. "Aren't they both pretty much the exact color?"
Abby clutched her chest at my question, appearing as though she were physically in pain and Kayla gasped. Okay, I guess not.
Shaking her head, Kayla pulled a leather-bound planner out of her locker and stuffed it into her purse. She stilled when Abby placed her hand on her arm. "Don't look now, Kay but here comes Foxatilly Brown and Leo Clark."
"Hide me," Kayla muttered, sticking her head inside her locker but it was too late, she had already been detected.
"Hello, ladies," Foxatilly greeted, waving his arm and bowing at the waist.
"Oh, hi, Fox," she answered a bit too peppy, pulling her noggin out and facing him with a pasted-on smile. "Are those new sneakers?" She nodded at the shiny red high-tops that he wore.
"They sure are," he replied, sticking out his leg to admire his footwear. "They're just released from the 'Lex B and Nike collab. The company only manufactured three hundred pairs so anyone that was lucky enough to snag them was only able to do so through connections."
"Really?" she arched an eyebrow, seemingly impressed by Foxatilly's admission of importance. Anybody who was somebody was apparently someone to her.
From beside him, Leo scoffed. "Man, you are such a sheep for only following the trends. Don't you ever care about just being original?"
Kayla placed her hands on her slim hips, scowling at the guy with the shaggy chestnut hair. "Not everybody desires to dress like a weirdo such as you do, Leo. By the way, the mechanics called and said they fixed your time machine. You're free to travel back to the seventies decade from which you came from."
She eyed him, her gaze lingering on his white platforms, bellbottoms, and floral button-up which contained a color palette of pea green and mustard yellow.
I cleared my throat, the crestfallen expression on his face feeling a bit too relatable. The get-up may have been hideous, but he certainly didn't deserve to be ridiculed for it. "I disagree," I piped up. "I think your outfit's groovy."
He gave me a broad grin as he fist-bumped me. "Right on, dude, and I think..." He paused to gesture at my black skinny jeans, matching tee, and boots. "Satan wear is hellishly fire. Yea?"
I cocked my head, arching a brow. "Yea, man, definitely. Whatever you say." I had to give the guy credit for at least trying.
Kayla rolled her eyes, tugging on my arm. "Matt, come." Pulling me down the hall with her, she huffed before stopping short and facing me. "Why did you have to embarrass me like that?"
"I humiliated you how?" I asked, spreading my arms. "You were the one mortifying Leo by criticizing his choice of clothing."
She stamped her heel. "He looks as though he wandered into the wardrobe of Narnia, discovered a whole other time period, and tumbled back out dressed up as a can of pea soup."
