Matt

"O.M.G. Is that Matthew Jones?!"

With an ice pack pressed to my swollen lip, I glanced up from the bench outside the principal's office. After being lectured for twenty minutes about the disappointment that is I, Mr. Henson suspended me for the rest of the week and instructed me to go wait out in the hallway while he phoned my dad.

I questioned what was going to happen to Chris since he was the one that started the fight, but the only response I received was the principal shifting his sights away and focusing on twiddling his ballpoint pen. "Got it," I continued, nodding. "Nothing because the championship basketball game is this weekend, and you need your star player. Might as well let the guy that is close to flunking out of classes take the fall instead, right? I suppose that's more in line with the school's values."

Mr. Henson's face darkened to scarlet before pulling me up from the chair by my arm and shuffling me out the door. "That's enough, Matthew. But if you would like to continue to discuss the topic then perhaps, we can re-examine the matter of this being your third suspension this year and that maybe we should look into a more severe punishment."

I shrugged loose from his hold. "There will be no need for that," I replied through gritted teeth. "Although, I was completely justified in refusing to cut open that helpless frog in biology."

He folded his arms over his navy blazer, a glare pinching his features. "We went over that too, Mr. Jones. You smuggled the amphibians from lab and released them into the school pool. The aquatics instructor had such a fright upon discovering them that she slipped and injured her back. You put her out of work for two weeks."

I turned around to face Mr. Henson. "Well, was she running away from them? Because the signs clearly state that there is to be no running on the pool deck so the way I look at it, she was the one who broke the rules and therefore-"

"Out!" With a scowl, the principal pointed to the bench outside his office which I plopped down onto with a defeated sigh.

"I still think she was the one in the wrong," I called as he slammed his door shut.

What's the point in arguing? No one ever believes me. And now, I have to somehow convince my dad that Chris deserved a broken nose...and vase. At least the latter could be chalked up to "poor vision" and not seeing the pottery on the shelf. Just like I hadn't seen his nose in the way of my fist.

I smirked to myself, but my smile quickly fell into a frown as Addison strutted down the hall towards me. "O.M.G." she exclaimed, holding up jazz fingers. "Is that Matthew Jones?!"

"Not now," I grumbled, scooting over on the bench so that she couldn't join me.

But she nudged her way in and sat down beside me anyways. "Guess who's TikTok famous?" She asked with a broad grin, tossing me her phone.

I peered down at the video she had playing on loop of me shoving Chris into the shelf and several pieces of pottery shattering to the floor. I winced as I was granted an outsider's point of view of the pummel that he had gifted me on the mouth. The clip had already amassed several thousand views, the brawl permanently etched into the memory of the world wide web.

"Great," I mumbled sarcastically, handing the mobile back to her. "That's just what I need. Solid proof that the rumors of me being a worthless nothing are indeed true."

With a sympathetic smile, she patted me reassuringly on the back. "Hey, it's not all bad. Sharbear3000 wants to know if the guy in the leather jacket is single because he's 'smoking hot'." She poised her fingers over the keyboard on her screen. "How should I respond? Is he?"
