A/N: Before you all come at me in the comments, I would like to add the disclaimer that Matt and Addison are just friends. Say it with me. Now go forth my gems and read on. Also, don't forget to drop the avocados. Iykyk.

Matt

I was sweating my ass off and there were mosquitos everywhere. Who knew that nature could be so...miserable?

From beside me, Jake cocked his head as he studied our handiwork in the form of a lopsided tent that leaned far too much to the left. "Well, we aren't men of the wild, that's for sure," he muttered beneath his breath. "But it should at least hold for the night. Really, the only thing we need it for is sleeping..." He paused for a moment, sliding his gaze onto my face.

I shifted my weight to my other foot. Why did he trail off? Is there something else implied there that we would be using the camping equipment for?

I hated being paranoid and dissecting every word and action of my best friend through a microscope lens but Chris' not subtle suggestion that Jake was gay for me wouldn't stop racing through my mind on a looped track. He's not. Don't be ridiculous. He's never given you any reason to believe otherwise.

But in case he was... "Yup, I think just sleeping will suffice nicely," I quickly rushed out.

He came up behind me, clasping his hand on my shoulder and I immediately stiffened. "Shall we go join the others for lunch?" He inquired lowly into my ear.

"Sure," I replied, my voice cracking. "I heard we are being served soggy buns and rubbery hotdogs topped with watery ketchup today. And who claimed that camping isn't fun?"

Likely, it had been me who made that statement. But who could blame me? After the Hester debacle at Winter Formal, the idea of being around my classmates broke me out into itchy hives and made me physically nauseous. The only thing that made the senior class camping trip even remotely bearable was the fact that Vanessa would be present.

She and I had been dating in secret for about a month when Avery High School's annual outing arrived. We had agreed that we would break the news of our romance to Jake as a united front when the time was right, but I had a strong suspicion that it wasn't that weekend. Certainly not when I was trapped in the middle of a forest with him, sharing a tent together and sleeping with my back turned and guard down.

I shuddered at the possibility of getting shivved in the night. No, thank you.

With a nod, Jake led the way to a grassy clearing where picnic tables and grills were set up. Lunch passed by in a torturous montage of sing-alongs paired with swatting away giant flies that kept landing on my hot dog and rubbing their legs together. And to continue the fun, a faculty member announced that the after-meal activity was a wild-life hike around the five-mile loop that circled Lake Tuma.

Who wouldn't jump for joy at doing that?  I thought sarcastically. Sign me up right away.

And as it turned out, Addison was equally displeased. Frowning, she folded her arms across her chest. "Why?" She whined. "It's so muggy out here. I'm going to sue the school if I pass out from heatstroke."

"Okay, Alex," I retorted, chuckling. "Calm down."

She arched a brow, glaring at me. "You act as though he wasn't justified either in bringing a lawsuit against the school after the P.E. rope snapped while he was climbing it. We've been warning the teachers for years about how unsafe it was."

Pausing, she blew out a breath and waved her hands over her cheeks. "I feel as though I'm suffocating."

I gripped her shoulder and grinned, taunting in her ear, "Well, maybe if you weren't cemented in four layers of makeup, you might actually be able to receive some air flow to your face."
