Matt
Jake had gone home sick from school which meant that when it came time for lunch, I was left alone to fend for myself.
Juggling my lunch tray in one hand and a paperback in the other, I scanned the cafeteria for a place to sit. Every table was filled with chattering students that on the surface, appeared friendly except I knew better. I had come to learn that their icy cold glares left my cheeks hot with humiliation and their scathing words planted roots inside my brain that made me believe the insults they so cruelly cast my way.
Matt's such a loser. He has no friends.
Matt's a dummy. He failed another test.
Matt's a nothing who's going nowhere. What is this? His third detention this week?
Matt's a crybaby. He really needs to move on. Didn't his mother die over ten years ago?
This is ridiculous. Why even bother? I was ready to toss my food in the trash and hide out in the library, my only safe space, when I spotted her radiant smile and shiny tresses that would put a diamond to shame. Unless?
She had beckoned for me to join her once before so it wasn't completely ludicrous to hope that she would make a place for me again without balking. Taking a deep breath, I threw back my shoulders and jutted out my chin as I made my way over towards her.
A cluster of our classmates surrounded Addison as she regaled them with the secrets of how she managed to keep her hair so glossy. "And then, I top it off with a tablespoon of coconut oil and let it sit for ten minutes. Ten minutes exactly. Any more than that, and you'll end up looking as though you swam in an oil spill."
As I neared, I slowed my steps, suddenly feeling not so courageous anymore. I'll just eat when I get home. It's only three more hours until then.
I began to turn away when she caught sight of me in the crowd. She waved me over frantically, her wide grin a beacon in such a desolate place. "Matt! Come join us." She patted the chair beside her.
Why does she want me to sit with her? Doesn't she know who I am? Doesn't she care that associating with 'the wimp' will tank her popularity? I hesitated for another few seconds but at the deep rumble in my stomach, I decided to give in.
It was just unfortunate that I hadn't noticed Troy Sullivan in the throng of worshippers first.
Curling his lip, he looked me up and down as I inhabited the chair next to Addison. "Is this wuss your boyfriend, Addie?" He asked, his voice dripping with disdain. "Aren't you a little too country club to hang out with a low life such as him?" He scoffed. "Or is that how you met? Was he the help that cleared your trash away or perhaps, the janitor that scrubbed your toilets?"
Addison shot a frosty glare in his direction. "Shove it, Troy or I'll tell everyone about the time you wet your pants in eighth grade." She covered her mouth as our classmates snickered. "Oops, I'm afraid I just did."
"Whatever, Barbie," he grumbled, stomping away, his deep red cheeks matching the color of his hair.
Addison beamed at me as I forced out a tight smile. "Don't listen to him. He's just jealous because he's been trying to score a date with me for weeks and I'd rather watch paint dry which is unanimously more entertaining."
Tucking a gleaming ebony strand behind her ear, she opened a bag of fruit snacks and popped a shark shaped gummy into her mouth. "I could have done without the Barbie comment though," she muttered, glancing over towards me. "Do you think I resemble some plastic doll?"
