Matt
"We're definitely lost." Jake thumped the wavering beam of his flashlight as he shone it around the corn maze. "I'm pretty sure we've already circled around this path a dozen times."
Furrowing my brows, I gazed up at the inky sky, using my knowledge of astronomy and the twinkling stars to guide us. "North is in that direction," I replied, pointing to our left.
My friend rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Matt? How is that going to help us when we don't even know which way we started?"
"Relax, man. We've got this," I encouraged, slinging one arm around his shoulder and mussing his hair with my knuckles. "This was meant to be a fun activity to get us in the fall spirit. Not something to stress you out over."
Jake brought his fingertips to his lip, biting the nail as he squinted into the darkness. "Video games are fun. Getting trapped in an endless sea of crops in the pitch black when you know I have a fear of the dark is just anxiety producing."
"Well, at least we won't starve to death," I remarked, pointing my own flashlight at a tall stalk of multi-colored corn. My heart instantly hammered at the sight of a shadowy figure darting through a cluster of crops. "What the fuck is that?"
All the blood immediately drained from Jake's face as he clutched onto my arm. "Knock it off, Matt," he scolded. "That isn't funny."
"I'm not joking." I took a step back, stumbling over a rotted piece of vegetable on the ground when the creature suddenly sprinted in our direction. "Move!" I instructed Jake. "Let's get the fuck out of here!"
I began sprinting straight ahead with my friend closely behind, the shadow figure keeping up steadily beside us amongst the corn. It only took it another few seconds before it overcame us and jumped out in front of us on the path.
"Rawrrr!" It growled.
"AAAHH!!" I dropped the flashlight from my hands, the beam bouncing wildly as the tool hit the dirt. Grabbing my friend by the arm, I pushed him in front of me to use him as my shield.
At once, the creature came into focus, its licorice waves bouncing as it began laughing hysterically.
"Fuck you, Addie!" I shouted. "You nearly gave me a heart attack."
She wiped a tear from her eye before placing her hands on her knees and cackling shrilly. "You should've seen your face," she said through wheezing gasps She widened her eyes and opened her mouth in a gesture that mimicked mine.
"I wasn't frightened," I mumbled, stooping over to snatch my flashlight off the dirt. "That's just my normal reaction whenever I see your face. You've got so much make-up on; it always catches me off guard that you aren't actually a clown."
She stuck her tongue out at me but the mischievous twinkle in her eyes remained firmly in place. "I didn't know you girls were out here tonight," she commented, falling into step beside us.
I shrugged. "We were bored and looking for something entertaining to do-"
"Thanks for deserting me," a feminine voice suddenly cut in. We whirled around as Vanessa emerged from the corn stalks, brushing off bits of crop from her jeans and narrowing her eyes at Addison.
I moved behind Jake, once more using him as my shield. I was still thoroughly creeped out by what her brother had told me about her and had been avidly avoiding her for the past week. Her gaze darted over towards me, and I lowered my sights to the ground, refusing to make eye contact.
"Sorry, V," Addison apologized, sounding anything but remorseful. "But if there's a chance to mess with Matt, you know I gotta take it."
"Well, now that everyone's had their fun, can we focus on getting the hell out of here?" Jake chimed in, turning around towards us and illuminating our faces in the beam of his flashlight.
