Alaska and California both went home the week after the incident, and surprisingly, everything felt alright for once. Everything was still and calm and quiet.
Hawaiʻi liked that.
It was so peaceful, this early March morning.
Earlier today, Hawaiʻi had taken a deep breath, smiling as she read a book quietly. It was nice, just her and Opae, curled up on the couch with whatever book Yua was reading at the time.
That house, where no one knew where it stood, exactly, surrounded by banana trees and a kalo patch out back. Home. Wonderful home.
When the telephone rang, it was almost surreal, because of how peaceful it was before.
I will never understand humans in that aspect. Hawaiʻi thought to herself.
The call came that the police couldn't find her mother... at all, and Hawaiʻi felt her heart stop a little at that. They had called around in Virginia, but several people said that the family that they were looking for had moved nearly three months ago.
No one knew where they went.
Because of that, Linda's Aunty was the most likely one to get custody, as she was Linda's Godmother.
Hawaiʻi sat on the bench, waiting for Linda to walk around that corner, to sit under the tree, up against the wall. Right where she sat while waiting for her father most days.
She was on time, once again. She looked up at Hawaiʻi's face, and seemed to be gauging something. "I've seen you before, I think. In a book or something."
"It would make sense if you did." Hawaiʻi laughed a little. "I have quite the noticeable face."
"You're Miss Hawaiʻi, aren't you?" Linda asked.
"Yes, yes I am. What's your name?" Hawaiʻi asked, and Linda looked up at her with a sceptical look, frowning.
"Linda. I don't want to talk to you."
"I understand. But I was asked by someone I know to drop by." Hawaiʻi said, sitting next to her by the stone wall. "Did you know that I know a friend of yours?"
"Which friend?" Linda asked curiously. "Angie? Because she lives in Virginia."
"I meant Miss Emma." Hawaiʻi said, laughing a little. "She's a very good friend of mine. I talk to her all the time, and she asked me if I could check up on you. You know, make sure you're alright."
"You look a little bit like Miss Emma. You have the same hair." Linda said, before weakly smiling. "Really poofy."
"Well, I am a mixture of everyone in the islands." Hawaiʻi laughed a little, shaking her head. "But as far as I know, Miss Emma doesn't have wings, does she?"
"I wish. Then she could take me flying or something." Linda said, starting to warm up to Hawaiʻi "Linda, I just want to check up on you. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine. My Pop's not." Linda said, before sighing. "Miss Hawaii... Do you have a Pa?"
Hawaiʻi was taken aback by the question, and then smiled a little, "Yep, I did. My Pa was the best person in the world. He was amazing."
"What happened to him?"
"Well... As my Papa would say, we're Land Spirits. Land Spirit parents often get replaced when the new version of them is formed." Hawaiʻi said and shrugged. "It's not the same as someone like you, who has her Pa with her."
"My Pop's in the hospital still... then he's going to be away for a long time. That's what the police officers say. Aunt Penny says... he got it real bad. She's really mad at him."
