"Half the time I don't know what they're talking about; their jokes seem to relate to a past that everyone but me has shared. I'm a foreigner in the world and I don't understand the language."
—Jean Webster
Day 67
It wasn't long before Astoria and Bellamy were living separate lives once more. They still spent too much time together (or at least, Miller and Raven enjoyed joking that they did), but they were busy with different things; Bellamy was officially a guard once more, which Astoria knew meant a lot to him after he was stripped of the job on the Ark, and the grounder spent most of her time in the medical ward letting Abby take samples of her blood and swabs of her spit.
Bellamy didn't know about that, and instead thought that Astoria was hunting or helping bring in supplies for the new structures they were building around the camp when she wasn't with him. Camp Jaha was growing every day, and Abby's first act as chancellor post Mount Weather was to change the name to Arkadia. Astoria liked it better, but she had teased the doctor that it wasn't entirely creative.
She much preferred to be Abby's lab rat than Dr. Tsing's. She showed up every other day, Abby would ask if she noticed any symptoms coming in, and Astoria would assure her she felt fine. She still had some time before any appeared, and the grounder was going to cherish every day she had before being alive began to hurt. Someday's, Abby didn't even need to take any blood, and just wanted to record how the girl was feeling and how many hours she slept.
Oran was most likely found drinking with Jasper, and the man found that the sky people's alcohol was something the grounders needed to discover for themselves. Astoria decided to let him wallow in his self-pity for a few days, but after checking in with Abby and spending a few hours watching Raven work on a wreaked vehicle they had managed to bring back to the camp a week before, she went in search for her brother. It was time for tough love, because nothing else seemed to work.
He was in the mess hall with his head down on one of the tables, and Jasper was a few feet away sprawled out on the floor. It was near one in the afternoon, and they both were sleeping like the dead. Astoria rolled her eyes and moved over to pick up the half-empty glass beside her brother's limp hand. She brought it up to her nose and scrunched her face up at the stench of alcohol, shaking her head as she poured the liquid over Oran's sleeping frame.
It ran down the back of his neck and he jolted to his feet, swaying slightly as he shook himself awake. When he caught sight of the cup in his sisters hand, he tried to wipe away the alcohol running down his shirt with a groan. "Chit skechi kom yu?" he hissed, but Astoria only rolled her eyes.
She slammed the cup back onto the table and surprising Jasper remained blissfully passed out. "Relax, you already reek of the stuff," she explained, grabbing his arm to pull him away from the table when he tried to reach for the half drunken bottle. He didn't fight her, but he definitely wasn't happy. "I'm done letting you drink yourself to death with a teenager."
