Hailey's POV

The rest of that day went a lot better than I thought. Lorelai and Rory came home and per dads request, we went to Luke's for dinner. I called ahead of time to let Jess know that my whole family was going to be there so he wouldn't try flirting with me. Once I got back to dad's house Sherry was already home from work and begun making the popcorn and even bought some of mine and dad's favorite candy. I started to feel more comfortable with her as the night went on. She didn't even mind that I would speak throughout the movie to comment on whatever was happening, she would even join in sometimes. It started to feel like a potential real family.

Maybe I could be happy. Maybe I could have a normal family.

After the movie, dad and Sherry went to bed while I used the landline to call Jess from a local payphone so he could get away from Luke, he told me that night that Rory had confronted him hours earlier about how me and Luke stood up for him at the town meeting. I never talked to Rory about that situation, but things had felt off since, like she's keeping something from me. We changed topics and begun to plan our next date. The rest of our fall went on as good as it could. Me and Jess went on 1 more picnic before the snow started to fall.

This week has been insanely busy. The bookstore has been busier than normal with more people buying books for the holidays. Mom and Rory have been working around the clock for some fancy Bracebridge dinner for the town. Apparently, the people it was originally meant for were snowed in, so the town was now going to take over for a fun night at the Independence inn.

Mom invited me, dad, and Sherry, but it was on their anniversary so they took that night to enjoy themselves while I planned to attend on behalf of us all.

The day before the dinner, Rory and Lorelai decided to enter a snowman building contest while I sat inside Luke's. I couldn't handle the cold like my mother and sister. Luckily, I had yet another good reason to stay inside.

"Refill Hayden?" Jess says, lifting my eye line from our book we were currently working back and forth between us.

"Do you even have to ask?" I say to him as he pours more coffee into my cup. "We should do this!" I say pointing to the book I closed in front of me.

"Do what?" He remarks back to me.

"Get on the road. Travel around the states. We can buy a van and make it a summer long trip once we graduate!"

"Just us?"

"Yea, is that okay?"

"It's more than okay with me, but how would your dad react?"

"About that. My dad doesn't actually know that much about you yet."

"What do you mean much?"

"Well, he knows you from my coming out party, but that's about it. Oh and he thinks that I have a crush on you." I laughed at my own words, but I was not prepare for the teasing that followed.

"You have a crush on me?!" Jess mocked me as I threw a napkin at him.

"Shut up! So are you coming to the dinner tomorrow night?"

"Do I have to?"

"You were invited so I'd say yes. Plus, don't you want to be able to spend the night with me in a room just a few feet away?"

"Why not in the same bed a few inches away?" He said to me with a wink before walking away to refill other coffee's
