Winter, my favorite season. The snow, the ice, and the cold have always seemed welcoming and comforting to me. My birth mother called my brother and I her snowflakes. We looked similar but were completely different, just like snowflakes. The Christmases of my youth were always filled with joy and merriment until she died. Astrid never knew those days. Father was home still like he always is for christmas. He makes sure that from December first till the twentyfirth that he's with us.

Ingrid and I had made a formal agreement between us to not bother each other during this time. I remember waking up one day while Ida was away. Ida goes away during this time to visit her sister. It's my father's way of saying thank you to her, she wasn't coming back until sometime after christmas. I was getting ready myself like I usually do and I wanted to braid my hair. I couldn't do it, "What are you doing?" Ingrid asked

"Trying to braid my hair." I replied

"Do you know how?"

"Ida usually does it. I don't have eyes back there you know."

"Let me help you. I know a way to do it and it looks really good." she said. I let her take control of my hair. I'm not going to lie, I was scared. Trusting the person I hate with my hair was not an option, but I couldn't do it myself so she did it for me.

She took my hair and started to braid. Two small ones on the side that connect to a main braid, "I remember when my brothers were born. I never asked for brothers, that's just what I got." Ingrid said

"At least you don't have to share your birthday with one." I replied

"You know I've always wanted a sister. Do each other's hair, share secrets, go to parties together. When I found out that I would be getting two sisters after the marriage, I was so happy. I'm sorry if I got a little snooty when my mom started doting on you. I've just never had that happen to me before."

"I'm sorry too. I just never thought that my father would ever remarry." I replied. She had finished braiding my hair. She even chose a ribbon to match my dress. We had finally become sisters after three months together. Today was special though. Today Lucas and I were taking Ingrid and Aksel out for a walk in the woods.

Every winter Lucas and I would go for a winter walk in the woods. This year we decided to bring Ingrid and Aksel with us. By our standards you had to be at least 11 to come with us. We grabbed our winter coats and went outside. I usually enjoyed this but this time was different the minute I stepped outside something felt wrong. The boys were about to walk off, Ingrid was about to go with them but then turned around to see me standing at the top of the stairs near the front door. She watched me, waiting for me to move. "Linnea, are you okay?" she asked

"Yes. I'm coming." I replied

"Are you sure you want to do this today?"

"Yes. I do this every year, today is no different." I replied. I followed her out the gate and into the snow. The snow has always been my friend, I didn't know that it would be my downfall.
