Maya POV
I placed my palm over my face to block the sunlight. I was sleeping on a bed in the attic. Neeya was with me last night. I looked around to find her, but she wasn't there. Maybe she left. I snickered to myself. How could I think that she would stay? I let out a breath of frustration. I am frustrated because I let my guard down. I let her see my weakness. I shouldn't have done that. I left the attic and went to the kitchen. My breath caught in my throat as I saw her.
"What are you doing here?" I barked at Neeya.
"I'm making breakfast," she said casually, shrugging her shoulders.
"Is it called making breakfast?" I growled at her. And why won't I? She totally messed up the kitchen.
"I will clean it up later," she said.
"No need. Step aside, I will cook." I pushed her aside and started cooking. She stood with a pout. "Don't just stand here. Start cleaning up," I ordered her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Neeya went to answer the door, telling me to continue what I was doing.
I have almost finished cooking. So, I set up the table while she answered the door. Neeya was gone for quite a long time.
"Neeya! Who is at the door?" I yelled.
"Me." I stiffened upon hearing the voice. No...It can't be. It can't be that woman. When I finally decided to live my life, she couldn't come back to ruin my happiness. I lifted my eyes to see her face, and it was her. It's her annoying smile that still makes me shudder in disgust. I closed my eyes to control my anger.
"What are you doing here?" I hissed at her.
"Can't a mother come to see her daughter?" I snickered at her words. Mother! She has the guts to call herself a mother.
"Get out. Get out of my house in this instance!" I shouted at her, pointing towards the door. But instead of leaving, she marched toward me.
"Maya, listen. You can't insult your mother in front of an outsider," she barked. Outsider? How dare she call Neeya an outsider! Neeya is closer to me than her! I glanced at Neeya. She was standing on a corner, lowering her head. It angered me even more.
"I said get out!" I roared. "I don't want to see your face. Just get out of here!" I screamed, throwing the stuff off the table. They scattered into pieces. I started to hyperventilate. I grabbed onto the table to keep myself steady. "Go... Go away. GO!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.
I can't stand this woman. She always reminds me of my past. She reminds me of the pain I have gone through; she reminds me how worthless I am; she reminds me of how weak and pathetic I am. I started wheezing uncontrollably. No...not now. I can't pass out now. Not in front of this woman. I can't prove that she is right.
Suddenly, she turned back and left. That's what she always did—turned her back to me. My head started spinning. I was falling as my legs gave out, and I let go of the table. I saw Neeya running towards me out of the corner of my eye. She grabbed me before I fell to the ground. I knew she would take care of me.
"Neeya... I...I am...tired...," I managed to utter before succumbing to the darkness, trusting that in her presence, I would find the strength and solace I desperately needed.
Neeya POV
Maya fell unconscious in my arms again. I dragged her to the couch and laid her down. I grabbed her phone and went through the emergency contacts. There were only three emergency contacts, which surprised me most because my number was on her emergency contact list. There was the doctor's number as well. I called him.
