After managing to drive through the front gates of his beloved Graceland, past the small number of fans who were still lingering by the entrance. A few of them were seated on the curb, looking a bit tired but still brimming with enthusiasm. Despite his own exhaustion, Elvis felt a deep sense of appreciation for their unwavering loyalty. He put on a charming smile saying good night to all of them as he drove by. Finally, after trudging up the stairs quietly to his haven, he allowed himself to collapse onto the bed, his back hitting the mattress with a soft thud. Gazing up at the ceiling, his mind raced with thoughts of Austin.
"I just don't understand it," Elvis muttered to himself.
His mind kept drifting back to Austin, the man he had met at Club Handy. He remembered their conversation vividly and couldn't help but smile at the thought of it. He had no idea where that burst of confidence had come from to go up to the bar and strike up a conversation with the man he had noticed earlier that evening while he was chatting to BB and a few other musicians.
"What don't you understand, honey?" His mother's concerned voice came from the other side of his doorway. It wasn't a surprise for him to hear her voice at this time as she usually would get up in the middle of the night sometimes just to go grab a drink from the kitchen.
Elvis sat up, realising he had said that out loud. "Oh, nothing Mama. I'm just tired."
"You've been working so hard lately. You need to rest more," she chided gently. Elvis absentmindedly nodded to her although she couldn't see him, and he soon drifted off into his own thoughts.
"Of course Mama. I'm gonna head to sleep now." Elvis lay back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, trying to make sense of his feelings, his mind tuning out the sound of his mama's footsteps drifting away from his door.
Elvis couldn't shake the image of Austin from his mind. The confusion and turmoil within him proved too much to handle as sleep finally overtook him. His dreams were filled with visions of Austin's sparkling eyes and warm smile, leaving him dazed and more conflicted than ever before.
He eventually fell into a slumber after thoughts of that perfect stranger raced through his mind.
At the same time Austin was walking back to his new apartment, trying to process everything that had happened that night. As he remembered the conversation and the feeling of safety he felt with Aaron, he took a deep breath and let it out again, trying to calm himself down from whatever he was feeling.
There were people everywhere, the quiet sound of music pulsing through the air like a heartbeat. He acknowledged that this was one of the few good nights out he'd had in recent years, despite all the confusion and emotions he was experiencing in the aftermath of the unforgettable evening.
Austin unlocked his new apartment, which was not far off Beale Street just a 15-minute walk. He stepped in, feeling the cool air hit his face. He had left the window open to let some cool air in as it could get hot in this apartment, especially now as it's summer in Memphis. He wandered over to the window, closing it gently, his thoughts still incomprehensible, unable to make sense of what exactly occurred this evening. His dreams that night were filled with the mysterious stranger he couldn't seem to forget easily.
