Cinderlily
[ Cinderella Retold ]
They said the kingdom of Hogwarts was a place of possibility. It was a land where dreams oft took flight, where even the most unfortunate could begin anew. Some even told stories of the magic that swelled beneath its very soil, seeping into rivers and growing into great pines. It was a kingdom so vast that anything was possible. Nothing was impossible. For Lily Evans, Hogwarts was home. She had lived in the kingdom her whole life and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. She loved sitting on her windowsill watching the seasons pass. The forest of trees behind the chateau changed with time, growing and withering before growing again and withering again. Every so often, there would also be rain. The pitter-patter of soft droplets against cool glass ushered in short periods of calm and quiet, seeming to cleanse the Evans Chateau of unease.
Her favorite sight from her windowsill, however, was not the forest behind or the clouds above. It was the weathered, little path to the front, stretching down the rolling hills and towards the city proper. It was a sight for sore eyes—that city. Lily adored the colorful roofs and flowing banners. She could always see people out and milling about, boundless and free like white doves taking flight. At night, when the dark came, lanterns would light up the windows, the streets, the castle.
It was a grand castle too, strikingly beautiful yet overwhelmingly formidable. Even from the distance, Lily could see just how large it was. If just a few feet taller, the spires could have touched the clouds and overtook the stars.
She’d never been to the castle, and it had been many years since she last visited the city. Her father had been alive then. Now, it was just Lady Evans and Petunia, her step-sister.
Lady Evans did her best in maintaining the Evans Chateau, but after all the years, the chateau was in a state. The gardens surrounding the house were overgrown. They climbed up the stone bricks, digging into the infrastructure. There were drafts in a couple hallways, and parts of the roof were leaking water.
That was why Lily had taken it upon herself to help out as much as she can, wherever she can. It was the least she could do for her family. Cooking the meals, scrubbing the floors, dusting the surfaces—she did everything.
