[ Ron's take on the climax of the Chamber of Secrets ]

Whoosh!

It happened in a second. One moment he was standing in a bathroom, and the next he was in pitch black. Every step took him closer to her, so he continued down the corridor, down the drain, down what he imagined to be the deepest depths of the underworld, down-

Screech!

He came to a sudden halt.

It was silent, the type of silence that bit to the bone like frost, that overtook all feelings like when Professor McGonagall would bark an order. Somewhere, a drop of water landed splat on the ground. It resonated in his ears, alerting his senses. He was here on a mission.

Straining his eyes, he searched for any sign of his sister. There was nothing.

There was only darkness surrounding him.

It was damp too. The humidity in the atmosphere only added to the smell of rotting flesh, mildewy water, and most distinct of all: death. The different odors reached his nose in a flurry, making him belch.

"Harry?"

His best mate's voice came swift. "I'm here," he said. "Just... just be vigilant. We don't know what's lurking in the shadows."

Ron nodded, a feeling of reassurance washing over him. He was glad that Harry had tagged along with him. However, his ephemeral relief banished as soon as another voice echoed through the room.

"Clearly, you know better than I do, Potter, so, it'd be best for me to head on-"

"Oh, no you don't!"

There was a disturbance in the still wind, and Ron raised his wand. He couldn't see where Lockhart was, but it was better to be ready than not. "You're coming with us," he said. "Come on, Harry."

"Lumos!" Harry's charm instantly brightened the room. It took a moment for Ron's eyes to adjust, but when he did, he took the rear, pushing Lockhart between the two of them.
