KYLE
"Sneakers," I called as I drove."Yeah?" she replied, paying more attention to her iPad than me.
"How do you know that guy?"
"What guy?"
"That Jayden guy you were talking to today?"
"Oh, he's my friend," she replied nonchalantly.
"How does he know your mummy?" I pressed.
"I introduced him to my mummy at my play, Kyle, but I think they know each other from before."
I knew it.My gut never lies.
"What makes you think that?"
"The way they look at each other when they're together. It's the same look Cinderella and Prince Charming give each other," she chuckled.
No, no, no, Jordan. I give your mummy Prince Charming looks, not that guy.
"It's not the same look, you know."
"Oh, it is. I've seen the look twice already." She put her iPad down. "Kyle?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think mummy likes Jayden?"
Well, shoot.
"I don't know, Sneakers."
I saw her grin mischievously in the rearview mirror.
"What about you, Kyle? Do you like-like my mummy?"
I'm sure my cheeks were as red as tomatoes now.
"Uh, well, I like your mummy... as a friend."
"No..." She dragged the word. "Not like that. I said like-like. As in, do you want to be my mummy's boyfriend?"
Between strawberries, cherries, and tomatoes, which has the deepest shade of red?
I sighed. "Sneakers, I'm just your mummy's friend, okay?"
"If you say so," she said innocently.
After dropping Jordan off, I decided to take a drive to clear my head.
Did Ashley know Jayden before? They acted weird around each other. Like at the party, the way they were staring at each other. The tension between them was thick. There's no way that didn’t mean something...
Screech...
What did I do?
I came out of my car and saw a purple-haired girl clutching her knee.
Dammit. I didn’t need this right now.
I squatted down, and she was whimpering a bit.
"Miss, I am so..." I trailed off when she looked at me.
Well, wow. This girl was definitely appealing to the eyes Her somewhat dark brown eyes and moist lashes were holding back tears.
She looked 18 or 19 or maybe she was older and just seemed young.
"I'm really sorry." I tried helping her up.
"It's fine," she said, her hand on her knee.
Did I mention her voice was silky?
"It's just a scratch," she said, trying to stand but almost falling.
I caught her in time.
"You need to go to the hospital to get that checked," I pointed toward her bruised (I hoped) knee.
