As the next day dawned, Selena felt a mix of determination and anxiety as she prepared to face her finals. She knew that studying alone wouldn't be easy, so she turned to Felix, hoping for his support and assistance.
She approached Felix with a hopeful smile, "Hey, Felix, do you think you could help me study for the finals? I really need some guidance, and your help would be invaluable."
Felix looked apologetic as he replied, "I'd love to help you, Selena, but I've got so much on my plate right now."
"Oh, I see. I guess you're busy," Selena said with a resigned smile, understanding Felix's predicament. Felix chuckled, his expression softening.
As they continued to talk, Selena couldn't help but appreciate the familiarity and comfort of their banter. Despite their differences, Felix had always been a dependable friend, and she was grateful for his willingness to lend a hand.
The final bell rang, releasing the students from the grip of their classes. Asher slung his backpack over his shoulder and headed for the school's exit.
As he stepped outside, a familiar sight caught his attention. Melody stood near the school entrance, her gaze scanning the surroundings as if searching for something—or someone. Asher hesitated, the familiarity of her presence tugging at his thoughts. It was clear that she was searching for someone, but he couldn't shake the feeling that maybe it was best for him to steer clear. The memory of their last interaction still hung heavy in the air.
Deciding to avoid any awkward confrontations, Asher veered off to the side, choosing a different path that would take him around the school building and away from Melody. He quickened his pace, glancing over his shoulder just once to confirm that she hadn't noticed his sudden change in direction.
Meanwhile, not far away, Selena was lost in her own world. A book in hand, she walked with a purpose, oblivious to the activity around her. The words on the pages held her rapt attention, transporting her to a different realm where worries and troubles seemed to fade away.
As she moved toward the school's exit, her focus was so intense that she didn't notice Melody until they were almost face to face. Startled, Selena looked up, her book nearly slipping from her grasp.
"Do you want to grab lunch?" Melody asks, so they walk towards the cafe not too far from the school.
As the two of them sat at a cozy little cafe, sipping on their drinks and enjoying a late lunch, Melody's candid conversation took Selena by surprise. It was a side of Melody she hadn't seen before—a vulnerability and openness that felt refreshing and unexpected.
"I'm so glad I ran into you, Selena," Melody admitted with a soft smile. "I left Asher a message to say I was going to drop by, but he never called back. Could you call him for me?"
"I think he's at work... But Melody... I've noticed that Asher acts different around you," Selena mused, her curiosity getting the better of her. "He seems pained, almost distant."
A wistful smile tugged at the corners of Melody's lips. "I think I was his first love," she admitted, her gaze distant as if lost in memories. Selena's eyes widened in shock, the revelation sinking in slowly.
"Our families were close when we were kids," Melody began, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "The three of us used to play a lot together. But when their parents died, Asher and Max became depressed. I used to go over to their house a lot, trying to cheer them up and just be there for them. That's when I fell in love with him... with Max."
Selena listened intently, her heart aching for the complexities of their shared history. She couldn't imagine the pain they had all gone through during those difficult times.
