I love spring. All the flowers bloom, which makes the house and yard smell amazing. The food starts to grow, and the insects and critters arrive. Many times, I've seen deer come, some raccoons, birds, bunnies. Bees and butterflies come too.
It was so peaceful, sitting there, in the grass. I was checking for butterfly eggs and removing weeds. I wish I'd known that would be one of my last peaceful days. For a long time at least.
"Kaitlyn! Come in for some lemonade!" Mom called from the kitchen window. "Coming, Mom!" I stood up and looked at the flowers one more time before heading to the front porch. I took my gardening gloves off and set them on the bench swing and went inside.
I wiped my feet on the mat and slid my shoes off. I went into the kitchen and sat at the counter seat. Mom had a big pitcher full of lemonade and a glass in each hand. She set the glass in front of me and filled it with the drink. "Thanks, Mom." I took a big gulp.
"Hmmm." The perfect balance of sweet sugar and sour lemons. "Not leaving me out, are we?" Dad's voice came from behind me. I jumped, spilling a little lemonade on the counter. Mom cleaned it up immediately. "Dad!" I yelled; he always scared me.
Mom set a glass in front of him and kissed him. I did an overexaggerated gag. Mom chuckled and asked, "Aren't you supposed to meet Amanda at the library?" My eyes widened at the sudden memory.
I gulped most of the rest down and ran upstairs. I put on some light foundation and brushed my brown hair. I ran into my room and grabbed my school bag.
I flew back down the stairs. Mom set an ADHD pill down on the counter, and I popped it in my mouth, swallowing it down with the rest of the lemonade.
"Bye, Mom. Bye, Dad." I kissed them each on the cheek and slipped my shoes back on. I grabbed my bike from the side of the house and put my bag in the white basket on the front of my bike.
As I sped down the path that led from my house to the sidewalk, I thought about how mad Amanda would be that we missed minutes of precious study time.
We had our science exam soon so today we were supposed to meet at the library to study. But I forgot. It's not that school isn't important to me; I have mostly A's and study when I need to. But with my ADHD, I forget to study and do homework.
But Amanda would always remind me. She's my best friend. With perfect skin, shiny blonde hair, and milk chocolate eyes, lots of people thought she would fill the blonde girl stereotype. But she's actually very smart and cares about school a lot more than some of the other kids in our school.
I stopped at the stop sign, panting lightly. When there were no cars, I continued to pedal. I stopped once again; I could see the library's roof from my spot. I checked, left...right. Repeat.
All clear.
I started to pedal when I heard the roar of an engine. I looked to my left and then right. Right there was a speeding, jet-black car. Heading straight at me. I froze.
I always wondered why people on TV would freeze in danger, needing the hero to save them. But now I understand.
Fear takes over your body, locking every part of it. Like a deer hiding in the woods from the hunter.
The car didn't slow down. I heard a faint honk, then pain radiated all over my body. I didn't have to endure it long because then everything around me went dark.
