***A Conversation of Hearts***

Marcus had called her over to help him sort through his old belongings for donation. It was a task he had been putting off, and having Amy's company made it more bearable. Together, they had spent the day sifting through old clothes, books, and souvenirs, laughing at forgotten memories and reminiscing about the past.

Amy was leaning back in a chair, taking a brief break from the work, her mind drifting back to that dinner at Alex's place when they were all gathered as friends. Marcus's words, the way he'd subtly led everyone to believe they were together, had caught her off guard.

His confession, "I suppose we are," followed by his admission that he'd been falling for her, had left her stunned and unsure of what to think. No matter how many weeks had passed and how much they were pretending that nothing had changed, it had changed. The unresolved feelings hung between them like a shadow.

They were friends, good friends, but had never crossed into romantic territory. At least not from her side. She didn't want to lose him; their friendship meant everything to her. She knew all too well where her heart was, and that realisation was both beautiful and terrifying.

The room was filled with Marcus's old belongings, and the task of sorting through them seemed more daunting now, given her preoccupied mind. The memories and emotions they stirred only added to her confusion.

Suddenly, Marcus's voice pulled her back to reality. "Amy, you're lost in thought. Everything okay?"

She looked up, meeting his concerned gaze. "Yes, Marcus. I just... I've been thinking about us and what you said."

His face tightened, and he set down the box he was holding. "I've been thinking about it too. I think it's time we talk about it, honestly."

Amy's hands clenched in her lap, and she looked down. "I know, Marcus. I've been thinking about it too. I'm just... not sure where to begin."

Marcus moved closer, pulling a chair and sitting down. "Amy, I care about you deeply. You know that. And I thought... I thought there might be something more between us. But I need to know how you feel. Truly."

Amy's eyes welled with tears, and she took a deep breath. "Marcus, you've been an amazing friend and support to me. I treasure our relationship and am grateful for everything you've done. But..."

She hesitated, tears spilling over. Marcus reached out and gently took her hand. "But you don't feel the same way about me, do you?" he finished for her, his voice breaking slightly.

Amy shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry, Marcus. I wish I had felt differently. I wish I could give you what you want. But my heart... my heart is elsewhere."
