"Emily, about what you're doing," he started, his tone somewhat stern.
"This sneaky journalist approach, digging into my past, isn't going to get you anywhere."
Emily looked taken aback by his harsh tone and quietly replied.
"I'm just doing my job...
Amy found herself seated amidst the array of scattered notes before her, each paper depicting a fragment of Alexander Carrington's life.
A sigh escaped her lips as she leaned back on her couch; her mind conflicted. Her fingers idly drummed against the armrest as she wrestled with her feelings. The assignment that had once seemed so straightforward was now complicated by her unexpected connection with Alex.
She had been searching for something scandalous, yet the more she delved into his life, the more she found herself respecting him.
She couldn't shake the memories of their time together, the way he'd opened up to her, the genuine warmth in his eyes.
But there was also Olivia and the promise she'd made. Her professional responsibility gnawed at her, pulling her in a direction she no longer wanted to go.
She needed to deliver something to Olivia, but the thought of painting Alex in a negative light was becoming unbearable.
"No embezzlement, fraud, no criminal record... nothing," she muttered.
Her eyebrows knitted together as she added, "He's a charmer, sure, seen with plenty of women... but Olivia knows that already."
As the words left her mouth, a pang resonated within her, a feeling she couldn't quite place. She quickly pushed it aside, refocusing on her task.
"Am I just missing something here?" she questioned aloud, her gaze catching sight of a particular note from last night.
The handwritten words, 'a heartbroken man,' seemed to echo in her thoughts.
The prospect of reporting back to Olivia without any substantial evidence hung heavily in her mind. Could she really present a hint of a past love affair as her main finding?
"Maybe mentioning his past love to Olivia..." she pondered aloud but shook her head almost instantly.
"No, it's not relevant. She's after something much bigger."
Frustration gnawed at her as she stared blankly at her jumbled notes. She decided to press deeper, reaching out to Steve, her colleague who had a knack for digging up the most obscure pieces of information.
"Steve, I need your help. Don't let me down this time," she said, her tone half-joking, half-serious.
As she waited for Steve to sift through any available records from Alex's college years, she thought it best to step away from her investigation, if only for a brief respite.
Dialling another number, she asked, "Hey, Lily, how about we catch up over a cup of coffee?"
