My plane landed several hours ago. I had driven back into the city and was sitting at the police station waiting to talk to the detective. I was starting to regret not having Jon with me. I already informed the funeral home to cremate him and there would be no funeral. The only friends my dad had were the drunks and junkies that lived at that complex and I wasn't going to pay for them to come down and all that nonsense. My dad had no will so all of his crap went to me or should I say a dumpster in the back of the complex. The police already caught who did it and really all I was there for was to go over a bunch of information and take possession of the apartment. I finished up at the station and made my way to Josh's house. He and Mary were letting me stay with them for a couple days. I pulled up to the front yard and saw that Tina and CJ were there too. I rolled my eyes and sighed. I seriously didn't want to see anyone. I was here to take care of business and leave. I heard my phone so I answered
"Hi"
"Are you OK?"
"I'm fine. I'm starting to regret not having you here. I just got to Josh's and it's like a freaking party here. I really don't want to see anyone. I just want to take care of all of this stuff and go back home."
"I can still come out there if you really want me to."
I lit a cigarette and took a drag "No, no it's fine. I'll be alright. It's only a couple days."
"Ash"
"What?"
"Put out the cigarette."
"Ugh. Fine. I better get inside. I love you."
"I love you too."
I grabbed my bag and went to the door. I was greeted by Josh who gave me a hug like I'd been gone for years. Reality is I'd been gone 2 months. I set my bag in the room I'm staying in and went out to the living room. The first thing Tina and Mary do is grab my hand and start ogling my engagement ring.
"How much did he spend on that thing!?!?!"
I shrugged my shoulders "I don't know Tina. I didn't ask. It's not something you should be asking."
"Why not? I know how much CJ spent on mine."
"That's because you went with him and picked it out."
Josh came over and handed me an envelope with my dad's handwriting on it
"What's this?"
"It came in the mail yesterday. After I got off the phone with you we walked down to the box and it was in there. Look at the postmark...same day he...well, anyway. You going to read it?"
"Now? I don't really want to share this with you guys. Sorry. It's probably just bullshit anyway. Guys I'm really not in the mood to visit. I'm going to go lay down for a while."
