Colby walked over and sat next to me as I waited for the doctor to start talking. I wish he would just get on with it either way. I looked over at Colby who gave me a nervous half smile. I looked over at the doctor waiting...I'm sick of the waiting.
"Mr. Good we apologize for the delay of information"
"I'm not trying to sound like an asshole, but spare me the medical jargon and just tell me if my wife is OK."
"Yes. She's very weak. We have been giving her blood transfusions, but it's going to be a couple days before we notice any significant improvement. We took her into surgery to try to get the bleeding under control. We did our best, but the only way to save her and get it under control was to perform a hysterectomy."
"Can I see her? Where is my daughter?"
"I'll have a nurse come take you back to your wife. Your daughter is in the nursery. She's fine. You can see her too if you want."
The doctor left and I breathed a sigh of relief. Colby pat me on my shoulder and smiled
"Told you"
I smiled back and waited for the nurse. All this waiting was absolutely driving me crazy. I'm not an impatient person normally, but this was insane. A nurse came to take me back to her. I was anxious. I couldn't wait to see Ashley. We stopped outside the door and the nurse gave me a few instructions that I didn't pay any attention to. Hopefully they weren't important. I went inside and smiled. She was sleeping. She looked pale and sick, but still beautiful. I walked over to her and gently kissed her lips and whispered
"I'm here Ashley. I love you"
I held her hand and gently stroked her hair. I was so happy she was alright. She stirred a little and opened her eyes.
"There you are" I smiled
She gave a weak smile and very lightly squeezed my hand. She slowly looked around the room and back at me
"The baby?"
She nodded
"She's fine Ash. I haven't seen her yet either. There's been a lot going on."I could see the tears in her eyes and I wiped them away
"No, don't cry. It's ok. Ashley no one is mad at you. Everyone is just really worried. I was so scared Ash. I thought I'd lost you. One minute we were talking and the next minute...I love you so much Ashley. I couldn't bear the thought of losing you. I'm so glad you're OK."
I never allow myself to get overly emotional or let things get to me, but everything finally caught up with me and my eyes welled up. She looked at me kind of shocked. I'd never done anything like that in front of Ashley. She pointed to the cup of water on the little table by the bed. I helped her take a few sips and she finally spoke in barely a whisper
"Please don't Jon...I'm here."
I smiled and kissed her cheek. I could see that she was exhausted, but she was trying to force herself to stay awake.
"Ashley. Get some rest. I'm not leaving. I'll still be here when you wake up. I promise. I might even have a surprise for you"
She gave me a little smile and settled in and went to sleep. I sat down and sighed. I moved the chair closer to Ashley and held her hand. I didn't really realize how tired I was until it was just the two of us and it was really quiet. I propped my elbow up on the arm rest and put my head in my hand. I was just going to rest my eyes for a second. I woke to the sound of rustling and footsteps. "How long had I been asleep?" Ashley was still fast asleep. I looked at my watch and saw I'd been asleep for over an hour. There was a nurse in here checking on Ashley and changing out IVs
"I didn't mean to wake you up"
"No, it's OK. I didn't mean to fall asleep like that."
"Well, just in case you decide to nap again this chair in the corner folds out to a little bed. It's not super comfortable, but it's better than trying to sleep in a chair like you were."
"Thanks. Hey. Would you be able to bring our baby in here or is that not allowed?"
"I think I can do that. You know she shouldn't..."
"I know. I'll hold her. I just..well...neither of us have seen her or even held her. It's been kind of a crazy day."
She smiled and left. Twenty minutes later she came back with a little bed and the baby. She handed her to me. I felt so awkward. I'd never held a baby before so she helped me do it properly and handed me a little bottle. She opened her little eyes and stared at me as she drank the bottle. I missed all of this with Tyler. I was determined to not let that happen this time. She was beautiful like Ashley. In fact she looked like Ashley. I smiled and softly talked to her trying to not wake Ashley. Colby and Joe came in to visit for a few minutes
"She's cute. Looks like Ashley."
"I'd let you hold her, but Ashley hasn't even seen her yet and I don't want her mad at me."
"Don't worry about it. We understand."
Just as Colby and Joe left I noticed Ashley waking up. I stood up with the baby and smiled
"Told you I'd have a surprise for you when you woke up."
She smiled "I want to hold her"
I half smiled "I can't. The nurse told me you shouldn't just yet."
Her smile dropped and she looked sad and disappointed. I decided to break the rules and let Ashley hold her. I was right here. Nothing was going to happen. I carefully passed the baby to Ashley. She was still weak so I had to help her a little. She looked up at me and smiled. I wasn't going to take this away from her. She almost died for this baby so she could hold her as long as she wanted in my opinion.
"What are we going to name her?"
"Can we name her Elizabeth after my mom?"
"Yes. Anything you want Ash."
