"Are you sure you really want to stay, I can send you back and catch with you later when I've finished in the citadel," Tam asked for the hundredth time. It has been a week since the incident and the whole society was frantic. People trying to send me letters, so I can describe the monster. Some came to the house but were ushered politely by Mr. Roberts, the old butler. It was chaos and through it all Arik was nowhere to be seen. He was examining the body in the city as the chief scholar. Now they sent for Tam as well to give them her research on the monster. I was to be left alone in the vast palace, but for some reason I was feeling relieved. Maybe I really need sometime alone. Tam kept asking for small details about my adventure over and over again. I thought about telling her about the odd dreams but changed my mind. I couldn't bring myself to cause her even more anxiety.
"It's fine Tam you go, I'll be fine on my own, I'll ask one of the maidens here to come with me to the lake of Azadur. Perhaps I'll feel better," I said, faking a smile. It has been a whole week and my powers haven't returned, as if angry with me for what I've done to my body. Tam hugged me tight as the butler opened the door, "I will be gone for only two days, please Layla, please don't fucking wound yourself again" she said, looking into my eyes with a sharp look. I smiled and waved as I kept looking at her cart disappearing.
I felt an empty feeling in my stomach. For the past few days, I've not been alone even for a second. Tam was always by my side checking on my wounds and ranting about her family wanting her to come to the family house in the city and how her birthday party preparation was going and how she wanted us to wear matching red dresses with golden ruffles. It was comforting to have an extroverted friend who can talk when you need to escape from your mind, but now as I stood in the silent hallway looking at the vast fields ahead. I felt the castle walls closing on me and the monsters' screeches growing louder in the back of my mind.
"Mr. Roberts please, can you ask a maiden to come with me to the lake of Azadur" he nodded and went quietly. After a couple of minutes, a young girl came with a basket of food in her right hand, a basket full of towels and linens in the other hand. I walked barefoot under the sun, feeling the grass tingling them gently and the breeze ruffling my short black hair and my dress. My leather suit was mysteriously lost, but I knew Tam was hiding it somewhere. The surrounding weeds thickened as we walked in the fresh air. Although it was quiet and peaceful, the silence made images of blood and open bodies come rushing through my head.
