In So Deep

It's late when Wednesday finally opens the door to their room. In fact, it was quite literally early morning. Still, she is greeted by the sight of Enid leaning against her bed, Thing patting her hand comfortingly.

"Why are you still up?" Wednesday asks as she closes the door behind her. Although Enid was a night owl, she still needed a lot more sleep than Wednesday ever did.

"Waiting for you", Enid says, not looking up. Despite not being able to see Enid's eyes, the way Enid's fists clench around her sheets speaks volumes. Spiders crawled up Wednesday's throat at the way Enid refused to look up, knowing the soft wolf was probably not used to such brutal violence. Something in the air thickened, like a string between them stretched so it was taut.

"I'm sorry you had to see that."

"I'm sorry I ran away."

They both spoke at the same time, both rushing to end the tension in the air.

"There's nothing for you to be sorry for", Wednesday tries to convince her. It was simply self preservation that Enid had demonstrated, and Wednesday couldn't blame her for that. In fact, Wednesday was glad Enid had heeded her words, because Wednesday would blame herself if any danger ever came to Enid.

"I could say the same to you", Enid answered, still staring religiously at her sheets. Wednesday hates how tense Enid looks, preferring a happy look on the girl. It felt wrong to see Enid like that.

Wednesday started her rebuttal with, "But-"

That's when Enid snaps. Her bright eyes blaze the color of the hottest fires for a moment as she looks up to glare at Wednesday. "No, Wednesday you don't get it."

Wednesday blinks a few times at the way Enid shuts her down. The truth is that Enid is right, she doesn't understand why Enid's apologizing for protecting herself as she should've. "You're right, I don't." She doesn't ask Enid to explain, figuring that Enid was probably too upset by what she couldn't understand to talk.

Turning towards her closet, Wednesday starts to shrug off her jacket, and stops mid motion when Enid finally says, "Would you have run if you were me?"

The question feels like a trap, but Wednesday replies on instinct, stepping right into it. Perhaps it's because Wednesday doesn't mind being trapped if it's Enid. Wednesday's eyes are sharp as she turns to face Enid. "Don't be silly, I would never run from danger, I revel in danger. I would rip apart any threat to you, cara mia. The idea of leaving you in danger is worse than facing a lifetime worth of sunny days only." The idea is so preposterous, Wednesday running away from danger? She reveled in danger.

"Exactly", Enid said as if that should've been the end of the discussion.

It only left Wednesday with more questions. Wednesday not running from danger had nothing to do with Enid's self preservation. Enid didn't even like the feeling of death bearing down on her. "What?"

"I was so scared that I left you to die, Wednesday. It would've meant I could've saved you but you told me to run away instead of standing beside you. And I get that we can't be seen as a couple, but I can't just run away every time you face danger." The words tumbled out of Enid, getting more and more hurried as she went on until she stopped, looking at Wednesday with pleading eyes. Oh. Oh. Never stopping to think that perhaps Enid would be just as devastated as her at the idea of the other getting hurt, Wednesday can only stare back with wider eyes than usual. The idea somehow makes Wednesday feel warm and fuzzy, which was not only revoltingly pleasant, but also in direct opposition to the way her heart clenched at the way Enid was looking at her as if she was going to say something to break Enid's heart at any moment.
