Of all the things Wednesday has on her ever expanding bucket list, coming back to their room to Enid sobbing isn't one of them. It has Wednesday doing a double take, wondering what she had done wrong this time.

It takes Wednesday back, the memories flashing before her eyes.

It's the year they both turned twelve, too innocent yet to quite know just how much Enid's words in the next few seconds would impact the rest of their lives. It was yet another one of those weeks once a year where Wednesday allowed herself to be kidnapped just to have an excuse to see Enid.

Suddenly as they're playing a rather aggressive game of tag (complete with jousting and wrestling to make the other surrender or until three strikes which meant their 'death'), Enid whips around, opening her arms and waits.

Unable to stop fast enough, Wednesday barrels right into her, and finds Enid cushioning her fall on purpose.

Pushing herself off of the blonde girl immediately, Wednesday stares down quizzically. This was unusual, as Enid was usually bent on proving herself superior in the athletics department. It didn't seem like a move to win the game no matter what angle Wednesday looked at it from.

Looking up with an unmatchable grin that engraved itself into Wednesday's eyes, Wednesday almost gasps at the magnitude of brightness glowing off of Enid in that moment. Wednesday's heart skips a beat and she wonders if maybe her chase for death has come to an end so early. Then she thinks that if this moment was her end, she could forgive herself for not having a grand death.

Opening her mouth, Enid requested, "Wednesday, be my girlfriend."

Wednesday freezes, eyes barely widening as she stares back. The way Enid's cheeks are flushed makes her want to reach out. Except for one thing. Wednesday couldn't fall for anyone. It wasn't possible. Except it evidently was by the way Wednesday's heart was pounding. Racking her brain, Wednesday attempted to find a point where she had fallen for Enid, but realized she couldn't. Had she been falling without noticing the entire time? Either way the existence of feelings meant Enid's danger. "Enid, I can't."

Looking away and hiding her face behind two hands, Enid murmurs, "It was dumb I'm sorry! How can two girls be together right?"

Appalled by the obviously wrong reasoning, Wednesday frowns and answers, "No? There's nothing wrong with that." Slowly she reaches out with one hand and pulls Enid's hands away from her face to reveal tears streaking down her face. Wednesday feels something in her drop to the floor.

Giving a wet hiccup of a laugh, Enid says, "Oh, you must not like me. That was so obvious. I- I'm sorry." It breaks Wednesday the way Enid attempts to smile through it even though the tears start flowing even faster as she tries to get through the words that obviously pain Enid to say. The way Enid smiled for Wednesday despite seeming to break on the inside at Wednesday's answer made Wednesday feel horrible in all the wrong ways. She had no idea how to fix this.

Letting go of Enid's hands, Wednesday reaches towards her face once more to softly wipe away a tear with her knuckle. "No."

"No?"

Taking a deep breath, Wednesday launched into her explanation, the only thing she could possibly do to get Enid to understand that it wasn't that Wednesday didn't want to. "Enid... I foolishly thought that I would never fall for anyone. So I made a deal with the devil to take my love away for a great and terrible power. If I parade you around as my girlfriend, the devil will definitely take you away."

"Then just don't do that", Enid replied, hope starting to shine in her eyes again. Although glad for the cessation of Enid's tears, Wednesday was utterly confused. How could she just not make a deal that was done long ago?
