DJ learned that rumors spread quickly in the base, proven by the one morning he walked into the lobby to be face to face with a very impressed Electroshocker.
Apparently, word had gotten around that Commander assisted DJ last training and many towers were left genuinely astonished. Electroshocker, of course, was one of the first people to know of this.
"How did training go? A little birdy told me Commander got up close and personal with you," Electroshocker said, a stupid smirk appearing on his lips.
"Don't say it like that! That makes it sound wrong!" DJ lightly bumped a fist against the man's shoulder, proceeding to walk right past him, now intent on getting to his dorm room. "It went fine. I don't get what the big deal is. Commander was just lending a hand! Everyone's been giving me weird looks like I did something wrong."
"You're new, clearly, so you don't understand the mere gravity of the situation. THE Commander grabbed you. THE Commander actually got handsy with you just to help!" His hands shot up in the air. "And you didn't once get told to do something else during training!"
"Is it really that odd?"
Electroshocker sounded suddenly exasperated. "YES! He never does that! The last time he's actually done something of that nature, it was with Scout." He then put a finger to his chin. "Ehh, well. Actually it was Minigunner, but Commander almost got crushed by his gun's weight so he didn't really help out there. Kinda just stepped away and glared for a while. But that's beside the point. The point is: you're one lucky guy and the team knows it."
"But it's only my sixth day?!"
"That's why it's so impressive, DJ!"
DJ was finding it hard to focus on just exactly where he was going with Electro scuttling around his feet like a hyperactive dog. He didn't know if he already passed his room, or if he was going in circles. The two men were nearing a turn in the hallway and DJ was sure right past that corner was going to be his room.
"I don't think— Oof!" DJ should really start checking past corners before he swooped around because he slammed right into someone. A couple of thuds and a familiar sounding grunt made DJ's eyes pop open. The DJ was horrified to see his leader, legs spread and lying on the floor with a pained expression right in front of him. Of course, with his abysmal luck, it just had to be Commander.
"Uh oh." DJ whipped his head around, eyes wide and pleading to Electroshocker. Clearly, he wasn't on board with assistance, as he shrugged and started to back behind the wall. "Good luck..." he mouthed and hurried off to god knows where. The bastard left him to die!
DJ really didn't want to turn his head back to Commander. He knew he was screwed. But, a little voice inside his head worried if he hurt him. So, despite his fear, he still stood up and made his way over. "I'm so sorry, Comm! I didn't see you coming. Are you okay?" He bent over a little with his hands against his knees, just trying to get a better look at his leader from above.
Trying to be nice, DJ offered a hand to the small man. Instead of taking his hand, the leader fixed his shades with a grumble and slowly forced himself back up on his feet, promptly wiping his pants off with his hands. Commander squinted at DJ for a moment, scanning his face. DJ felt himself begin to sweat nervously. The silence was dangerously thick. After an uncomfortable amount of time, Commander finally spoke, voice softer than expected. "It's alright. Watch where you're walking next time. You have a big build." He almost patted DJ's shoulder, but quickly caught himself and stuffed his hands in his coat's small pockets.
Once again, the man walked off, not without a mild limp, though. He blinked a couple times, stunned at the interaction. Once he processed the fact he knocked his leader on his ass and probably gave him a bruise somewhere, DJ rubbed his face in guilt at that. At least he didn't get scolded.
