Chapter Nine

"Every minute I spend with you is like being in heaven and looking in an angel's eyes."

-Source Unknown

Sammy walked home in sulk, only one person gracing his thoughts. Why in the world was he attracted to Nathan, the way his golden hair shone in any light, matching his golden eyes and quirky grin…

Okay, it was hard not to like him.

But Sammy would’ve never thought a boy like Nathan would steal his first kiss. No, not steal. Take. Give. Care enough. Those were all words that could’ve described it. He thought back to the way Nathan’s soft hands caressed his body, his lips whispering a song against his that only they could hear. And even though Sammy had reserved his first kiss for his future wife, he was happy Nathan claimed it his.

But that left Sammy confused within himself. All he ever liked, he was sure, was girls. But Nathan made him yearn to do more, explore the forbidden lies in sin. To hold him for eternity. Where did that leave him? Gay, Bisexual, Straight? And where did that leave them? Together, undecided, friends? He left before he got an answer.

He reached his front porch in record time, but inside he heard raised voices. He groaned and sat on the second step, tired and frustrated.

The argument was heated as their voices filled into his open ears. He realized that it was about him, as his father screamed. “What boy?”

“I don’t know! His name was Nathaniel, and I’ve never seen him before! But the way our son looked at him…”

He cut her off, “No way! My son will not be a faggot! I’d rather him die than that.” Tears sprung into his eyes just then at his father’s harsh exclamation. Die? That was extreme.

His mother sighed frivolously, “I fucking know, Reginald! But what am I supposed to do, kill him? He’s seventeen! He can do what he wants!”

A slap echoed throughout the house, followed by his mother’s wail. Sammy’s heart tore in two. “Don’t you ever say that again, Eliza. He’s my son, he’ll follow my orders.”

“It’s not like they were making out in front of me,” She defended her son, “But I had this feeling…”

Another slap, followed by a grunt. Sammy’s heart doubled it’s speed. “May Jesus have mercy on your soul.” He heard his father spit. “And that bastard child of yours.” Then footsteps echoed toward the porch. Sammy held his breath as the door opened slowly. He felt his father’s distaste before it was spoken, “Sammy.”

“Yes, father?” Anger boiled in his frame. “Or do you prefer Reginald? Because the way you’re treating us…mom. You’re a stranger.”

His father chuckled, “Oh, they finally dropped, eh? Why don’t you just leave? We’re better off without you.”

His lower lip quivered. “Is that what you want, father?”

“Why not? If you don’t see that boy ever again, you can stay. But I don’t want a fucking faggot in my house.”

Another bout of anger, “Look, you piece of shit. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“What did you just say?” He asked icily, raising his voice and stepping closer.

Sammy, without regret, got off his butt and began walking away. His father bellowed, “You’ll rue this decision. My door won’t be open when you come back.” He ignored his father and kept walking, not knowing where he was going.

He planned to come back, if anything to rescue his mother like Nathan had rescued him earlier.

Nathaniel awoke to panicked knocking on his door. Who in the holy hell? He thought. He didn’t plan to answer it, but as the knocks grew louder and faster, so did Nathan’s irritation.

Finally, he swung the door open. “What?” He yelled at the person banging on his door. There was small Katrina, scared and timid.

            “Nathan…” She began.

He grunted, “Is there a reason you’re knocking on my door…on a Saturday?”

She nodded shyly. “Nathan, I didn’t know who to turn to.” He then noticed that she was crying. “Sammy’s…gone missing.”
