Surprise, relief, and sadness all mixed in her head. Vinnie hadn't seen him in years, and yet there he stood. The purple haired insomniac who happed to be her childhood bestfriend since they became first years in elementary.
"Hitoshi..."
She stood up and they shared a warming hug. He pulled her away after a moment and pointed to the bruise under her eye.
"Damn. What happened to you?"
She casually brushed him off.
"Oh, it's nothing. Just ran into a couple of drunks."
"I see.. C'mon. We'll go patch it up at my place."
She nodded and started to follow as they walked in silence for a bit. Awkwardness hung in the air along with a hint of curiosity. Hitoshi looked at the sidewalk as he broke the silence.
"It's been a few years since you left your aunt.. Just where did you run off to, Vi?"
The air around her started to get a bit thicker.
"I.. I have a crappy apartment near the city. Isn't much, but at least I got a roof over my head."
Vinnie had to lie about still living in an apartment. She couldn't tell him she had joined the path of being a villain.
"I miss you, y'know. You stopped coming to school, you stopped coming over. I don't even see you around the city. It sucks."
He let out a small chuckle at the end to keep the mood from sinking.
"I know, and I'm sorry.. Just been busy getting money to pay for rent and all that."
They arrived at his house after a bit. Both his parents were out working the night shift. Hitoshi went to get ice from the freezer as Vinnie went to sit on the kitchen counter. He put the ice in a bag and held it onto her bruise as she looked to her bottom right. She glanced up at him to see a slight smile on his face.
"What?"
"Nothing."
He quickly glanced into Vinnie's eyes before looking back at the bruise. She laughed a bit.
"You're a bad liar, Hitoshi."
He adjusted the ice bag and let out a small chuckle.
"This is reminding me of when you got into that fight when we were third years in elementary."
She smiled as she looked back at her ill-tempered self.
"Ah, the one against the sixth years."
"Mhm. You deserved that punch, though."
She scoffed at him.
"Hey, they bumped into me. Plus, that notebook was new and they made me drop it."
She crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"So you decided to tackle them?"
"They deserved it."
He chuckled and set the ice bag down into the sink so it wouldn't leak.
"Sure they did. Your bruise should be alright, shouldn't take too long to heal."
"Thanks."
She smiled at him.
"No problem."
He smiled back.
A couple seconds passed before he asked Vinnie if she wanted to stay the night. She agreed and borrowed some of Hitoshi's clothes like she used to when they were kids. Although, his clothes were now oversized on her. They used to be the same size back then, but Hitoshi had grown a lot in the past few years. They also used to sleep in the same bed, but Hitoshi decided that he'd sleep on the futon while Vinnie slept on his bed. Both had said their good nights and went to bed for the night.
