"I promise, its only for one night." Elizabeth reassured her husband as they sat outside.

Lilian had been brought over to spend the night since their mother apparently had some big thing she had to do and was just going to make her young daughter stay home by herself. And thus, Elizabeth had no choice but to rush over and grab her.

"Look, as long as she stays in her pen, she'll be fine." Mordecai responded bluntly, prompting Elizabeth to chuckle and roll her eyes.
"She doesn't need a pen, Mordecai. She'll sleep on the couch, it'll be fine."

"Where is she, by the way? You didn't just let her run amok in the house, right?"
"Of course not. She's taking a nap on the couch as we speak."

With that, Mordecai turned to the window to look, before suddenly jerking back in surprise.

"What??"
"She's....awake now."

Eliza turned to the window, seeing her little sister peeking out and waving hello.

As the night progressed, Lilian seemed to be intrigued by her brother in law, often peeking at him from the side of the couch or behind doorframes. Elizabeth thought it was cute, but Mordecai...not so much.

"Can I help you??" He finally asked after about the sixth time catching her peeking at him.

Just like the other times, once acknowledged, Lilian quickly dipped back down, hiding from view.

"Lilian, honey, you can come say hi. He won't bite." Eliza reassured her as Mordecai rolled his eyes.

The child peeked out once more with a meek "hi."

"Yes, hello, Lilian." He responded as he picked up his newspaper.

"Do you like Edith Wharton?" Lilian then asked, climbing up over the arm of the sofa to sit next to Mordecai, who promptly inched away from her.

"Don't climb over the sofa," He insisted, "And yes, I've read some of her works."
"Which one's your favorite?"
"'Ethan Frome'."

Having found common ground, the two began to chat as Eliza made dinner.
