"Do you have a girlfriend?"

Diya threw these words at me, as if it was a child's play. I did not expect this. So, I asked.

"I beg your pardon."

She didn't hesitate. And repeated.
"Do you have a girlfriend?"

Lord, my throat almost choked.

Gulping down the reluctance,  I said "No."

Things were a little heated up. If I did not rebel against this question, Diya would suspect.

"Deotima, at this point of time, you should certainly focus on your studies and not on whether I have a girlfriend or not. I think that I have made myself, clear enough."

Diya slowly looked up at me. Her eyes looking directly into mine, a little moist. Perhaps?

"I knew it," she huffed.
A lonely drop of tear started it's voyage across her cheek.

"Ahaa" I hummed.
My first instinct was to wipe away that droplet from her cheek.

She was not looking at me now. But the speed and intensity of her tears increased. I couldn't hold it in anymore. My intrusive thoughts won.

I cupped her face into my hands and gently wiped away her tears with my thumbs. Needless, to talk about the somesaults in my stomach.

I wonder if feeling that was normal? I mean, never have I ever heard or read that a guy has experienced somersaults. I don't know. All I know, is that I did.

For a moment, I doubted if my touch made her uncomfortable. I was removing my hands from her face, immediately.

"Diy......." NO, I said to myself. It's Deotima. Call her Diya in your heart. For now, it's Deotima.

"You were crying that day, at the party too, weren't you?" I said. "I saw you, though. You can't deny."

Her tears stopped at once. Her lips parted. She wanted to speak.

But...

"WRIDDHI DA, YOUR MOTHER HAS COME," Dev barged into the room.

"Wha...why?" I asked.

He shrugged. "Let's go and check."

Diya and I made a light eye contact, before we ran downstairs.

"Areh....Diya beta," my mother was overjoyed, pulled Diya into her arms and kissed her forehead and cheeks. "I'm sorry, I couldn't make it to the party that day. But that doesn't mean that you won't come to Wriddhi's birthday party...."

"Wha....wait, my birthday party?" I interrupted, clearly disappointed.

"Yes, birthday boy," Dyut thrashed at my back.

"AH MAN, THAT HURTS!"

"You all are coming for Wriddhi's birthday party, alright?" Ma said.
"NO. No one gets to say 'no'. You all are coming, that's final."

My birthday party, why!

The next chapter will have the birthday party sequence from Deotima's pov

The next chapter will have the birthday party sequence from Deotima's pov. I had planned this birthday party sequence, since such a long time. I'm excited, are you?
