These are the only words, my mind could conjure, when I saw what I saw. You know what I mean, don't you?
When Dyut's father called me, I could only see Diya. It took me a couple of seconds to gulp that in.
The nervousness, I felt at that moment, was almost equivalent to the anguish I felt, while writing my entrance examination to college.
First, I had never imagined that Diya would show up. Second, I had never ever, even in my dreams, thought that Diya would attend my party, wearing the prettiest dress, I have seen.
I have always had an affection for Diya. She's pretty. True. However, I think she's beautiful- much beyond physical appearance. But, at this point of time, my side-eyes didn't fail to notice how that single fringe of hair twirled along her cheek. I also saw her softened eyes, her stone-studded earrings and how that watch dangled around her wrist. Oh, she's surreal. Absolutely surreal.
I had walked past her, I spoke to her father, her brother's, her mother, her aunt, my friends, everyone, apart from her. Her eyes were clearly expecting.
Why does her gaze look so different?
"Wriddhi Da." She called.
This is going to be the end of me.
I turn back.
"Happy Birthday," she said. "I just wanted to say happy birthday."
She smiled.
Diya smiling at me, is something rare- once in a blue moon kinda situation. And, in that very moment, I thought-
'How to not fall in love with her?'
She's so sweet.
I clear my throat. "Oh, thank you, Di-" I took a moment, before I corrected myself, "Deotima."
This was the first moment.
The second moment was while cutting the cake.
My mother had announced that all the kids would stand beside me, during the cake butchery.
Ma placed my four year old wailing nephew on my left arm. Dev, Dyut and all my friends hovered around me. In this while, I lost sight of Diya and Ma. Little did I know that Ma had been coaxing her to stand beside me. Shortly, I found Ma inserting Diya between Dyut and me, on my left side. My nephew's wailing head acting like a barrier between me and her.
But, suddenly he stopped his crying. His wails transformed into a smile and he threw his hands forward, willing to shift from my arms to Diya's.
She forwarded her hands, and my arms brushed with hers, while I was giving her the baby. This was the first time, this happened. My feelings had gotten a little blurred at that moment. I dont exactly remember what, I had felt.
When I regained composure, after a few seconds, I noticed that when with Diya, my little nephew was a changed man- smiling and giggling.
I looked at Diya once. She looked back at me. Her eyes smiled. So did mine.
