By the time we played Nancy Drew and threw some ideas around it was already 7:00 and we were still at a stand still. Do we go over there guns blazing demanding her back or try and slip a prank in on them too?
"You know what? Forget it. I'm just going to walk over there and ask for her back. If they don't give me her, I'll call the cops and report a kidnapping." Before they could stop me I walked by the door slipping my sandals back on, and crunched across the glass determined to get my best friend back. I took the trail that led directly from the front porch steps of our house down close to the lake and then up the slight incline to the boy's house. My fist slamming against the door. "Wake up assholes! Time to release the hostage!" I screamed still hitting the door as hard as I could. No response. "Okay then. You asked for it." Max had a dog and fortunately for me, he left his food and water bowls outside. I grabbed the steel pails and walked around the side of the house. The faded blue paint was noticeable but their garden was beautiful. (Various types of violets and roses, Max's mom was a realtor and her favorite hobby was to garden. She even won some sort of competition for her lilies one year.) I walked over to the right side of the house, the only ground level bedroom they had, and started banging the two bowls together, making as much of a ruckus as possible. David pulled the blinds up, his brunette hair in a tangled mess, hazel eyes barely open. He was shirtless with a pair of pajama pants hanging loosely at his waist. "Crash, your crazy girlfriend is at my window and she's disturbing the peace. I'll let her in only if she'll take something off in the process." He yelled over his shoulder. David was a pitcher committed to the University of Alabama baseball and his body showed every bit of training he endured.
"I'm not his girlfriend and everything is staying on" I said putting emphasis on the 'not' "just open the door so I can get my friend please."
"Walk around, I'll let you in." He said with an impish grin.
I went back around the house to the door. The handle began to move and as the door swung open I said, "Thank you for being so civilized today Da-" but instead of David standing on the opposite side of the entry way, Crash replaced him. "Hey babe. What's up?"
"Don't babe me and don't play innocent." I looked directly into his eyes, challenging him. It was a common occurrence back when we were together. It was one of the things I loved about him. He never failed to level me out when I needed it.
"You really just need to accept the fact that I am innocent and I'm yours, babe."
"Crash, seriously, cut the crap. We're done and there's no going back. I'm here for Alexa because I know she's here so just let me take her home and I'll be on my merry way. Never to see your snake face again."
"Oh Bridge, your words wound me" he started to pout "but if you must take our dear Lex from us then you must enter our threshold and it's always open for you. Just like my bed."
"Oh c'mon Crash. We all know Bridget didn't give it up to you." Max said walking down the stairs, the rest of the boys at his heels. They all began to hoop and holler like they had scored the game winning touchdown.
"You're damn straight I didn't. It's why Crashy boy here ran to Skankzie that night and I'll let you boys in on a little secret. If he had been patient it was going to happen that night. It's why I was looking for him and ultimately why I found him with her."
Crash's grin dropped. His jaw locking to the side like it always did when he was beyond pissed.
"Problems Crash?" David asked stifling a laugh.
"You went to Maizee when you could've had Bridget? I mean you're like my brother and everything but you're hella stupid." Alex added.
"I'm standing right here guys, and I'm flattered and all, but it's still not why I came over. I need Alexa and I need her now. So if you would go retrieve her for me that would be great."
"Okay, okay, fine, she's on the couch and we didn't touch her. She was passed out and Dave grabbed her so those creeps we threw off the boat wouldn't touch her either. She was safe with us Bridget. Scout's honor." Max held up his hand mocking a boy scout.
"Thank you Max. I appreciate it but really the polaroid? That was beyond creepy, but I will admit it concerns me as to what you guys really did for the prank war."
"Don't worry about it. You'll find out sooner or later." Crash's eyes were still locked in on me and his stone cut features made him look even angrier.
"Okay, well, I'm going to get Lex and leave now. Thanks again Max" I walked over to the couch throwing one of Alexa's arms around my shoulders. "C'mon champ, it's time to go home."
"My God Bridget. Stop screaming. I'm right here."
"Alexa I'm not screaming. I'm helping you home, idiot. Now shut up before I decide to leave you with Dave."
"I mean, Dave, Dave isn't that bad looking. But let me tell you. Cal. Calum. He is a stunner on the eyes."
We had exited the building by then and were making progress on the trail.
"Well it's a good thing Calum is staying in our house. You know the one you didn't sleep in last night?"
"That wasn't our house?"
"No, Lex, that was Max's house."
"Oh. Wait. If I wasn't in our house. That means no one was in our room. Except you. Or was there a plus one last night?" She raised one eye brow, expecting an answer.
"No Lex. I went to bed alone-"
"But did it stay that way???"
"Yes Lex. I was alone all night. No one else."
"Damn it. I had money on it."
"On what?!" I stopped abruptly, Alexa lost her footing in the process almost face planting in the dirt, but just as she about hit the ground I grabbed her torso, keeping her up right.
"That Luke would end up with you last night. There goes my money."
I just rolled my eyes. "Whatever you say Lex. Let's just get you home before you injure yourself."
She just nodded. The walk took longer than expected but when you have a hung-over eighteen year old on a nature trail it makes it extremely difficult to walk in a straight line. Especially if she's relying completely on you to guide her.
We reached the stone steps and Calum greeted us.
"Well there's our naughty girl. What? My sex appeal prove to be too much for you Alexa?" he reached out for her and she gladly left me and went straight to him. She stopped short before entering the house and turned back to me.
"Maybe you should have bet on me because damn."
"Lex, go to bed. Your bed!" I added as she waved me off letting Calum lead her upstairs.
I walked in the glass had been cleared up and everyone else remained where I had left them.
"So, that was easier than expected" I began "and on my little walk I came up with something that will get them back and let them know they can't push us around."
"Do share your evil plan. I'm sure we're all intrigued to hear." Luke spoke up giving me an encouraging grin.
"I'm going to need a lot of Kool-Aid, some glue, a distraction, and a pop tart."
"I can understand the first three parts but you lost me on the pop tart B." Izzy began.
"Well it's hella early and I still haven't had breakfast. Plus I had to lug Lex home and that was a chore itself. If I'm going to be an evil mastermind I would prefer to do it on a full stomach."
