Chapter Three
"Mallorie, please," Eli said, "You don't have to do this. You don't have to feel like you owe me."
'I don't feel that way. I'm just a giving person,' I signed, smirking. I was sitting in the chair next to her hospital bed.
"I don't know if I believe that."
'You don't have to. I already talked to the doctors, by the way.'
"You did not!"
'I did and they said as long as my mother signs, it can be done.'
"And your mother is going to sign, huh?"
I nodded.
"Mallorieeeee," she drug out, "Why are you doing this?"
'You need kidneys, or at least one, I have an extra one.'
"What if you get kidney failure and you need a kidney? You wasted it on me."
'It isn't a waste if it's helping another life out,' I pulled my license out and handed it to her.
"What am I looking at?" she snickered, "Your middle name is Louise?"
I looked at her with a scolding look.
"Oh, that's not what we're looking at," she said, quietly. She smiled, "You're a donor."
'I can kill myself tonight and you can have both of my kidneys if you don't think I'm doing this out of the goodness of my heart.'
"Yeah, don't do that. I'd feel bad for stealing your kidneys," she handed me my license back.
The doctor walked in, "Hello, girls," he smiled, picking up Eli's chart. He pulled a pen out of his pocket and wrote on her chart, "Ready to get out of here, Elizabeth?"
"Definitely," she replied.
He smiled, then looked at me, "Who's your friend?"
"This is Mallorie Greene," she said.
I waved.
"Oh, this is the mysterious donor," he said, smiling still. He smiled a lot.
I nodded.
He pointed to his throat and gave a questioning look.
I nodded and shrugged.
"Well, that'll soon be situated, won't it, girls?"
We both nodded.
"We'll get a nurse in here to get you situated and ready to go, okay?" he stated.
"Thank you," Eli said and he left, "He was definitely cute."
I nodded, smiling, 'Oh, yeah.'
Patricia walked into the room, "Let's get you dressed, shall we?"
"Mom, I can dress myself. I'll meet you in the hallway, okay?"
She shrugged, "Okay, dear." She left.
Eli got out of bed and pulled jeans on under that ugly gown. She turned her back to me and I turned away, shielding my face from seeing her.
"Okay, I'm decent," she said a couple minutes later.
I looked at her, 'You look normal.'
"I hope that's a compliment."
I nodded, 'How do you speak ASL so well?'
"Deaf brother and a deaf boyfriend," she shrugged.
'Do I get to meet them?'
