Chapter Five

Clark and I hadn't spoken of that moment. I assumed that he was waiting for me to make the next move by telling him whether I wanted to be his girlfriend or not.

I didn't know what I wanted. I liked Clark a lot...but I liked to keep people in suspense.

I bit my lip as I thought about it.

Poor Clark, he didn't deserve my suspense. I just felt so awkward randomly bringing it up.

I also waited because my parents still wanted me to be with a nice deaf boy. I assumed my parents just wanted me to keep myself a mute. They didn't want to get my hopes up in case the surgery didn't work for my vocal cords. I wasn't concerned about that. If I was mute or if I had a voice, I'd still be Mallorie Louise Greene, wouldn't I?

"Mallorie?"

I looked up with wondering eyes. I had been leaning on my elbow with my hand on my face and just staring at the white board.

"Are you with us right now?" The teacher asked.

'I'm sorry.'

"She says she's sorry," Wendy translated for me.

"Just try to pay attention."

I nodded to the teacher and carried on with my thoughts.

"So, Mal," Clark started, leaning against my locker, "You thought about it?"

'About what?'

"About what? Really, Mal? I think you know what."

'I just don't know.'

"What don't you know, Mal?"

'I don't know how it's gonna end.'

"Who cares how it ends? Why not just live in the present? Do you always concern yourself with the end?"

I nodded.

He just stared.

'I assumed that we were already dating.'

HIs eyes widened, "Mallorie Louise Greene, I had said that and you told me it wasn't official until I asked you out," he paused, "Are you trying to watch me squirm?"

I looked away.

"You are, Mallorie!"

I smiled and looked at him, 'You know me so well.'

"You're a little monster," he poked my stomach, "You've had me worried."

I was still smiling, 'I know. I'm evil.'

He put his hands on my face and pulled to him, "Sometimes you drive me insane."

'Just kiss me already.'

He backed away, "I don't know that one."

"She said to just kiss her already," Wendy said from behind us.

We turned to see her leaning against the locker behind me.

"How long have you been there?" Clark asked.

"Long enough," Wendy said, "Just kiss her so we can go to lunch."

"You're a real romantic, you know that right?"

She let out a small laugh and covered her eyes.

I looked back at Clark and smiled.

He leaned into my face and kissed my forehead, my nose and then my lips.
