Mallorie Greene is mute. She lost her ability to speak when she was ten, after a career she built for herself. She is now seventeen and a target for every bully to pick on. She's got a hearing/speaking friend, deaf sister, and a family full of support; yet she feels like something is missing.
She might find out what it is when new kid, Clark Henrie, comes to join their school. He notices she's different and wants to know more; but will their parents approve?
Along the way, she meets Eli Gilbert, a girl with a voice. Eli becomes one of the most influential people on her life and helps her make one of the hardest decisions of her life. Can she do it, and will everyone accept it?
