CHAPTER SEVEN
I knocked and knocked on the front door. Please open. Please open.
It finally opened.
"Mallorie," Wendy's mom appeared at the door.
I waved. I gave her pleading eyes.
"You want to see Wendy?"
I nodded.
"Come on in sweetie." she stepped to the side and let me through. She shut the door, "She's in her room."
I smiled and walked up the stairs and down the hall to Wendy's room. I knocked softly.
"Come on in," she said sweetly. She probably didn't know it was me.
I slowly opened the door and stepped in halfway, "You sure?" I asked, hiding behind the door.
"Yeah," she said. The inflection in her voice staying the same.
I slid all the way in and closed the door. I leaned against it, "Look Wendy. I'm sorry. So sorry. Sorry doesnt even describe it. What I did And said, how I yelled. I'm sorry."
"Mal, you know I'm not mad."
I stared at her, "What? How can you not be? I abandoned you for Eli and I yelled and kicked you out of my house."
"I realized that you must've been under a tremendous amount of stress. With having two surgeries in such a short amount of time. You had a kidney taken out and vocal cords put in. The anticipation of wondering whether or not the surgeries were going to work and be worth it, or be a complete waste of time, crushing all hope of getting working vocal cords. So an apology is completely unnecessary."
"Why are you being so nice to me? I don't deserve it."
"You're my best friend, and hopefully I'm still yours, so I'm supposed to forgive these outbursts. And be by your side. It's what I do."
"Of course you're my best friend." I walked toward her with open arms. I wrapped my arms around her without permission and she hugged back without hesitation, "I wuv you."
"I wuv you too." She let go of me, "so what happened between you and Clark?"
"We actually got back together."
"Why did you guys break up in the first place?" she sat on the bed and I joined her.
"He found out about my surgeries in the wrong context. He found out after he found out his parents told him they were getting a divorce." I paused, "oh please don't mention it to him! I don't think he wants anyone to know."
"Your secrets are my secrets."
"It all kinda came out like word vomit. A fight happened then he left." I paused, "I told him I loved him and we walked away."
"And you actually got back together with him?"
"He apologized and justified his behavior. His parents are getting divorced."
"But for him to walk away after you said that?"
"You forgave me because you said it's what you do as best friends. Clark is my best friend. I love you and I love him."
"But he just left you."
"The heart does for reasons the brain cannot understand."
"If he hurts you again, Mallie, I will crush him."
I smiled, "I'll hold you to that."
******
"So havent seen you in awhile," Eli said, plopping down on my couch. "How is everything?"
